Hi guys I've been looking around at what 1440p is affordable and good performance for the money however I do have some doubts.

I was looking at this one - Dell UltraSharp U2713HM

I don't know whether it's a good move I'll probably keep my 23 inch dell 1080p monitor for browsing whilst playing games on the 1440p monitor however
I don't know whether the Dell UltraSharp U2713HM is good for gaming.

Any thoughts or suggestions to what I should buy?

I do play FPS, a tiny bit of BF3 and quite a bit of CS GO but apart from that
I play many titles so I was curious to whether the Dell UltraSharp U2713HM would be a smart buy.

im also looking at this monitor, and i do have the same douts as you :)

i did ask on here yesterday and Rusty has one, he says its good

I have a 2713HM and find it perfectly fine for gaming and I play just about everything. It's a great screen and a nice upgrade from 1080p.

I had exactly the same worry when I was looking into 27" 1440 monitors, I stumped up the cash for the dell and say it is a superb screen no problems with games or any of the issues motioned in various forums, its a cracking screen you wont regret it!

When you say it's a nice upgrade is it a "wow" difference?

Yes.

Here is my 1440p 27" Dell next to my 23" 1080p LG this was before calibration but you can see how much more of the pic you can see on the Dell. Photos look stunning at 1440p.

The Dell U27 HM oozes quality.

As for GPU power needed...it really depends on what games you play and what you find is acceptable framerate. A single GTX 670 plays games at 1440p pretty well.

I added a second GTX670 as I wanted to maintain 60 fps without compromising max/near max settings.

Well I might have to add a second 670 :D

My single 2GB 680 does fine at 1440p. I'm not a constant 60fps person so the odd dip to 45fps does not bother me at all.

I have just gone from a single 680 to SLi 670 FTW cards and tbh it does make a nice difference.

Regarding the U2713H:

I think I might be sticking with Dell, just got to decide between sticking with 24 inch with the U2413 which is less of an upgrade or the 27 inch U2713H which is more of an upgrade but will have the drop in performance issue.

You are aware that both of those models suffer from fairly severe (and colourful) inverse ghosting? Not trying to put you off, you might love them. But they wouldn't really be my top choice for gaming even amongst the IPS crowd. :)

Would get the HM if I were you :).

SpeckleD did you have that WOW factor from 1080p to 1440p?

in a word yes, because the pixel density is that much higher, you can also get away with reducing the AA in games to keep the performance up without ruducing image quality, After having it a month or so I am loving it.

I was at 1900x1200 and went to 2560x1440. TN to IPS, 24 inch to 27 inch. Can't say I regretted it at all. I bought a Hazro H27WC, so limited connectivity and only one input....but no additional scaling/processing which means low (5ms or so I guess) input lag.

Just for the image quality alone, it was a massive improvement.

EDIT: You do need impressive GPU power though. One 680 is the bare minimum (I am running 2 in SLI now), and that may be the only downside as it were, if you like playing the latest and greatest.

Having owned both a 27" Apple with 2560x1440 display and my current Dell 29" monitor with 2560x1080 (21:9 aspect) I much prefer the Dell. 1440p is just wasted space for gaming/movies and I actually prefer the 21:9 aspect for work too as its essentially like dual screen 1280x1024 monitors, plus the aspect works great with Windows 8 apps side docked.
