To NAS or not to NAS?

I picked up a cheap HP Microserver last year, since I've populated it with a GFX Card (HD6450 i think) and a P410 RAID card.

It was initially intended for use as little HTPC, but has since began to act as a fileserver/NAS box and I've ended up playing the odd game on it too, Monkey Island, Broken Sword 5 and BTTF.

I'm at the point now where I'm thinking....

  • Should I buy a decent low power NAS box and keep using the Microserver as is?
  • Build a small and cheap 'low heat' ITX build, capable of 1080p output and playing the occasional game? (Mainly telltale / old adventures / low spec games)

Hmm, the GFX card was only 30 quid and I prefer hardware based systems if I'm honest. Yes it cost me about 80 quid in total but I'm happy with it at the moment running in RAID 5.

If I'm honest i'm not after all of the functionality a synology or qnap would provide, I'm literally just looking to store photos, music and video files that's it with a reasonably low power footprint if possible.

How do the NUC systems cope from a graphics perspective?
