To service or not to service?

My Peugeot 106 was last serviced at 4300 miles by an independent garage after having its first 3 services performed at the Peugeot dealer.

It's mileage currently sits at 56k - and is due it's MOT in August. I got the independent garage to check the car out last week in preparation for its MOT (In N.Ireland we have to go to a proper DVANI testing centre for MOT tests). The garage found no problems with the car but advised brakes may need attention in near future.

According the Peugeot manual the 50k service is an intermediate visit, which contains an oil top-up, screen wash top up and coolant level top up. With the 60k service due soon - within 2 months I'd say, I'm debating whether it's worth taking it for the overdue 50k service - just to have a complete service history.

I'm thinking of trading car in soon as part-exchange with a dealer for a "new" car, or giving the car to my sister - I'm scared I'll lose more value than I already have by missing this service.

What do you all suggest?

I suggest a service ASAP if it hasn't be serviced for 51'700 miles :p

Service it immediatly - it isnt an oil topup it needs its an oil CHANGE. Changing the oil will cost you 25 quid tops even at a garage. It's quick, easy, and does wonders for your engine. You dont want the same oil in a 106 for that length of time.

I am sure that the service won't be just an oil 'top-up'. They will replace the oil. 13'000 miles is a long time to have the same oil sitting in the car.

Oil manufacturers tend to suggest changing the oil every 2 or 3 thousand miles, but they want to sell more oil.

The car manufacturers vary, some saying 10k or some with variable servicing will go up to 20k with long life oil. But they want to sell more cars, don't want the things last forever!

Most Haynes manuals suggest changing the oil every 5000 miles.

In summary, it probably isn't worth paying for a service if you are going to hand it in to a dealer. With a car of that age they will just look at the book value and send it off to auction. When I have traded in low value cars they really hardly even look at them.

If you are thinking of giving the car to your sister then just change the oil. That is the most important thing.

Grr - you posted before me. I shouldn't have written an email in the middle of writing my post!

Whether its worth it from a value perspective obviously depends if we are talking about a K reg 1.1 XN or a 53 plate 106 GTi in mint condition.

It has done 56k. That is a lot for a wee car, suggesting 5 or 6 years old. At least

Surely this doesn't apply to synthetic oil though? I read that synthetic can easily last 20k miles, is there any truth in that?

Synthetic oils in HGV's lasts considerably longer - I'd have thought the same would be true for cars.

An average oil servive interval for a Scania, is 60,000km!

Don't know, but some diesel cars have a 2 year/30k ( ) variable service interval. Can special long life synthetic oil last 30k?

Our CDTi Astra has a 2 year/20K EcoFlex variable service, but I haven't looked in the book to see if it says anything about additional oil change schedules.

Will look later...

Sorry I should clarify...

Its a 106 Independence 1.1 - 2002 Reg.

According to the Peugeot service manual I got with the car, 40k was a major service - I got this done at an independent garage and got timing belt etc changed.

The 50k service is classed as "intermediate" and the service guide explains that this service is only oil check + top up, coolant check + top up, and screen wash check + top up.

I may put it through the MOT at start of August then book it in for the service ASAP after.

Your oil should be changed every service along with the oil filter.

EDIT- also from reading your first post it seems like your thinking that as the 50k service is overdue you might as well wait until the 60k one to get it done

Over running a service interval = bad
skipping a service = much worse !

Just get it done ASAP and then do the next service in 10k or whatever the service interval is. The mileages won't tally with the ones stated in the service book but it would be the much better option for your engine.
