I'm looking for a headset myself, the problem is my last proper pair of headphones were Sennheiser HD600's.

Am i rght in thinking i'll be seriously disappointed with Sennhesiers head/mic sets compared to those, or are they still acceptable for music as well as other mic based tasks?

I really want to hear from someone whose used some serious phones in the past and has any type of mic headset now.

Cheers!

It really is annoying that you cant buy any good quality headsets with high quality headphones and mic. The Sennheisers are still the best combo but are far far from perfect. Best bet would be to look for headphones and a decent mic maybe a Plantronics clip-on mic or something.

Quite why some manufacturer hasn't come in to fill this gap is a bit of a mystery, Spend £100 on a soundcard then plug in a crap pair of cans.

I know something they should make, though it'll only work on closed back headphones or ones with a large smooth plastic panel on the ear cups. Basically, a mic boom arm which attaches to the headphone with a suction cup so that you can attach the mic to your favourite phones to turn them into a gaming set. Easily removed too when you don't need it. I have a big suction cup from a CRT here and some electrets, i'll make a prototype :D ;)

I just asked this question as I have nice phones too (sennheiser 650's), and I don't want to replace with an inferior quality headset just for the benefit of adding a microphone for games.

Been trying to find a seperate mic that plugs in to the line-in socket, so I'm trying a tie-clip one.

Do a google for 'elara microphone' - only a fiver. I've just ordered one, I'll let you know how good it is.

cheers for replies, are usb based mics any better than a line-in based one? they still have to have a pre-amp in there somewhere and its probably the same quality as that on basic sounds card, right?

Anyhow, i think i'll do this. I can't afford HD650's but i think i'll sell one of my 7900 GT's to fund it :)

Anymore seperate mic recommendations?

USB could well be worse than the majority of soundcard preamps and ADCs, but your going to be let down/hear the biggest difference depending on the capsule used, so it isn't much of an issue.

i can't really find a clip on mic that looks like it will perform well. I'm probably going to get the HD650's but i don't want to pair it with a poor mic.

Anyone tried the Beyer Dynamic DT290 and similar? Seems Beyer do quite a lot of decent cans with mics. Of course you will need a convertor if you get one with XLR...
