good power supplies should have a zero volt switch circuit inbuilt to stop any sudden power on surges

Well turn it off when you sleep then the second you get up turn it on by the time you have breakfast - shower - ect it will be ready for you :)

Ive wondered the same thing I try to save and by doing the wright thing switching it off but it can be switched on/off as many as 10 times a day,ive also tried the sleep option but have problems with some drivers and it takes just as long to load up anyway so i use the off switch

Some drives used to degrade over time by turning on and off your machine.
I believe that doesn't occur anymore and is more limited to server machines but I could be wrong.

how come paul, could you tell me your reasons for this?

main reason is that i am on it all the time during the day for work, then in the evening im on and off it all the time or i log in to it from my laptop to access files

but if im honest, its because i dont mind the small cost of it standing on standby to have ready as soon as i want it (which is very often)

As Paul above I keep as small desktop running for file access etc when needed but my gaming rig is frequently off to save power and I would have thought better component life as less heat to contend with

I keep mine running when I am home but when I'm out it's usually in S3 standby mode.

I heard that it's better to leave a PC on all the time, due to power surges etc (it's the same with all electrical items, they break when they are switched on, ie bulbs) but I think it depends on how much you use it.
