Hello guys recently my motherboard have developed a fault. There is light on the motherboard but no response upon pressing the power button no case fan spinning nor PSU fan etc. I tried both buttons on the case itself and on motherboard - no result.

Additionally, attempted to do reset CMOS, switched bioses, even took out Cmos batter. Furthermore, tried different power supply, 1 ram stick/ different ram and no results. I've verified on my brothers z97 board that the ram, cpu and power supply is fully functional.

Thus Im not sure if I should buy another board or just sell what i got left/re-use and go from there. It seems the z87 or z97 boards and even b/h serie boards are incredibly expensive on common auction site and local advertisements. Any advise would be appreciated.

Current spec

I7 4770k

H100i

2x4gb 2133mhz gskill ram

MSI Z87gd65 (DEAD?)

Evga gtx 780 sc acx

Corsair AX760 psu

250gb samsung ssd

Aquaero 6 pro fan controller

CM storm trooper case

How much would a new board cost? under normal circumstances it would not be worth upgrading from a 4770k to a 8700k, but if a new z87/97 motherboard will be stupidly priced then it may be worth looking at the cost of upgrading after the rest of the parts are sold. Would you be just upgrading the motherboard, CPU and RAM?

And what do you mainly use the PC for? Gaming?

Thank you for your responses

If I were to buy new from rainforest I can get:

-Asus H81M-PLUS for £54.04

-Gigabyte Ultra Durable H81M-S2V for £53.42

-ASRock Motherboard H81M-VG4 R3.0 for 36.99

If I were to chose z97/z87 board it would have to be used from common auction site or local deal which indicate a cost of at least £90+ for half decent board. Plus the risk that board may be faulty. I tried to look locally but only cpu+mobo+ram bundles are sold for £300

I play mainly cs go and some AAA titles if they interest me. Mainly use the computer to browse the web, youtube, Netflix, write essays etc.

If I sell the cpu and ram I may get around 130-150 pounds plus 150-200 which I can put towards the new board cpu and ram.

How do you know its not your PSU thats dead ? Could be that.

There is a green light on the motherboard and when I press the button it doesnt power up nor the fans spin up or lights light up anywhere i.e. from h100i. I’ve connected psu to my brothers system and it works without an issue under full load. I also tried different psu on my board but without any results

I would say get one of the rainforest ones for now, you wont be able to overclock the CPU but by the sounds of it you don't need to anyway. Should be good for another few years then!
