I'm currently running:

P35C-DS3R
E4500 @ 3Ghz
2GB Geil Black Dragon 6400
Gecube HD 3850 (factory OC)
Corsair HX520
Seagate 7200.10 320GB

I have about £170 to spare at the moment, but am not sure whether to upgrade now or to wait for sometime next year to do a complete new build with Nehalem.

The trouble is that I feel that my system is quite nicely balanced now. If I upgrade any two parts, I think it may well be bottlenecked by other parts-if I get an E5200 and 4870, I would see a decent improvement but would still be bottlenecked by my RAM and slow hard drive. I'm also not somebody who needs to be running every game at max; I'm quite happy having high/medium in Crysis for now.

I'm kind of leaning towards saving my money for Nehalem, but what do you all reckon?

I cannot afford to spend any more than £170, so don't try to make me!!!

It's 19", 1400x900 :)

EDIT: My main uses of the PC are gaming, web browsing and word documents (so the only really intensive use is for games).

I would say if happy with the way the system runs then save that £170.

If looking at a new build next year then will want/need every pound you have then.

Hi manic111, considering you are playing at quite a low resolution, unless the games that you play are struggling to run smoothly, I honestly don't think you need to upgrade.

Now, if I was in your situation, I would start saving for a nice 24inch screen. It really does make a massive difference going from a 19inch to a 24inch screen. :)

Yea that's kind of what I thought.

Also thought that I might get myself a nice new monitor if/when I finally find myself a job!

I would stick with what you have and wait for Nehalem, as you seem quite happy with the performance you are getting.
When it is time to upgrade you will know.

Save your money for a complete system overhaul, as you should hopefully really see the benefits.

Upgrade in a few months. Your system is still strong enough. And indeed a bigger screen like 24" would be very nice. Keep in mind that if you upgrade to a 24" screen, to play games smooth again you will need some upgrades like gfx card etc as the native resolution also goes up to 1900x1200 :)

id save up for the 24inc screen, and if you dont want then you will have just save some money so all good, from the sounds of your post there is no reason for upgrading for the sake of it
