Hi people.

Well I really am in 2 minds what to do. My current system does everything I ask of it and more. But I am in 2 minds whether or not to upgrade. I will be upgrading my case in the summer and it will be having a white and red theme. Plus I have fanced a Rog board for some time now. But I can not decide what to switch too if I do upgrade. My system will be getting overclocked and want a minimum of 4Ghz. But do I go 2011 X79 or 1155 Z68. Or and I know prob what most people will say on this Do I go a full AMD FX and GPU setup. I use my system mainly for gamming and a bit of folding and the usall web browsing.
I do quite fancy an X79 but using the 3820 as I dont see softwere utalising more then 4 cores at the moment. And if and when that does catch up it would then be just a case of new cpu.

Your cpu is still considered pretty top end. I dont think you will see any improvements in day to day usage unless you do something specialised. And as for rog boards, you are just paying for the name. They are no better than a top end board from the standard range.

+1 to all of this

The i7 920 is still a great CPU and with a bit of overclocking it will keep playing gmaes at the top levels for a few years yet.

If you are doing folding, then AFAIK that mainly requires a powerful GPU - plus the X58 has plenty of PCIE lanes to run a few high-end cards.

As for upgrading, if you really want to go down this road then I would strongly suggest you wait until the end of April when the new 22nm Ivy Bridge CPUs and boards are launched - however as has been mentioned the real-world performance difference won't be great. Also, don't consider AMD bulldozer - in many situations it will be a downgrade from an i7 920.

If you really want a noticeable difference in performance then my recommendations are to keep your current CPU/motherboard/RAM and get a new GPU and an SSD. For ~£200 you will be able to pick up a graphics card significantly more powerful than a GTX 260. As for the SSD, that will make the OS/applications/games load up quicker and generally make the whole computer feel more responsive (so long as you install the OS and key apps on the SSD).
