Hi guys

Wondering if it's time to upgrade. Current setup is three years old or so, so wondering if it's time to upgrade.

MB: Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7
CPU: Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K
Ram: TeamGroup Vulcan GOLD 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel
GPU: GTX 970

SSD, HDD, PSU, mouse, keyboard, headphones etc are all more modern and wont be being replaced.

Edit: This is a gaming rig

Hi

Maybe chuck a new gpu in there if your current one is struggling. If not then I would stick with what you have for now as the cpu is still fine.

Ah, I was wondering but I wasn't sure. Cheers.

So, what would you suggest? A 1070?

A GTX 1070 would be a decent upgrade as it would cover you for both 1080p and 1440p. What monitor are you currently running ?

Also this video should give you some idea on performance:

Skip to 4min 37 if you don't want to watch it all.

If you're just playing single screen at 1080p/60hz, I'd stick it out with the 970 for another while as it's a very decent card still (about same as a GTX1060 3GB), see what happens with pricing over the coming months.

At the moment it's bad, though improving somewhat.

Honestly, the only component I would upgrade, and only if you are struggling, is the 970.

Given the GPU situation, probably best to hold on to it for a few more months until GPUs hopefully return to normal pricing again.

Upgrade the 970. There is a significant difference between a 970 and a 1070. You will really notice the difference. But the 4790K is still a perfectly good CPU. Although something like an 8700K is better, the difference can hardly be described as good value for money. Upgrading to a 1070 you will see a 100% improvement in GPU power that will directly affect gaming, but upgrading the CPU and you will not really notice much of a difference for what would be a significantly more expensive upgrade. The 1070 makes a huge difference. It is so much faster than the 970. The 8700K was more subtle though. It will increase your frame-rate a little, but the biggest difference I saw was that it ironed out any small dips in frame-rate when the PC started to struggle. Bang for Buck, as they say, the 1070 is by far and away the winner. Unless you really want to upgrade the CPU then I would keep it till the next generation come out.
Re the pricing, well NVIDIA don't seem to think the price will come down until next year. In fact they seem to think it may well peak some time later this year, so, there doesn't seem to be much point in waiting. We have no idea when the next generation will appear or when prices may fall.
