at present a student, i use a friends office as i dont study at home but im fed up hauling the laptop through with me. there is a headless laptop there so started using that but its slow, 1.5gb ram running vista slow.

option 1: so cheapest option is buy a 2gb stick and bump it to 3gb. but i worrk that it will still be painfully slow. its only a 1.6 something ghz core 2 duo with a 60gb hdd inside.

option 2: there is a couple desktop machines in the back, optiplex 740 and a 755 they have no hdd or ram.

option 3: buy a new cheap as possible desktop build as in trying to stay under £200

option 4: buy soemtihng better, to replace my media centre phenom 9500 box and move that machine to the office, max budget likely be about £400. poor student so stretching really not much of an option.

Well, shame you haven't got access to members market yet as you'd easily get there a new desktop or laptop for around £200.

c2d is good enough if you aren't gaming on it, I'd just stick cheap 2nd hand (or cheapest new, around 50quid) ssd, buy that extra 2gb of ram and you're sorted. for 50-70quid you'll massive difference in performance :).

tbh if i was going to get a new drive id prob opt for sticking in one of the desktops. (ought to be faster cpus than the laptop one)

i just keep thinking if im spending that then its not to far to buying a whole machine.

when is it people got access to the members market? i read stuff here but clearly not a huge poster.
