Basically im looking for a monitor (will be buying this week :)) and just wanted some opinions as to whether i should go wide screen or not? what are the pros/cons? i mainly play UT2004, Q4, Doom3, Footy manager 2007, and for uni I use 3dsmax, Adobe after effects and Adobe Encore DVD, what would be my best approach? I do watch movies on here but only sometimes. My main problems are really will my gfx card be able to handle the Monitor well enough, my spec is in my sig

agreed Widescreen is the future.. after getting a few widescreens over normal its great - you wont go back!

quite like widescreens, just bought another one. Word processing/text editing is still better on a 4:3 or 5:4 though.

buy rotating stands, its what i jsut did and il never go back.

To the threadstarter i personally love widescreens. Some of the pluses i love are massive taskbars and i tend to use the screen as follows.

I have my main amps taking up 2/3 of the screen such as word and IE which leaves a strip down the right or left for IM apps or Media player etc.

To the OP, I think just about everything you mention there works perfectly well in widescreen (dunno about footy manager tho) with the odd ini tweak needed here and there (Doom 3 + Q4). UT2004 is superb on my 2007WFP. Something like 3DSMAX, the extra screen space and res is very handy.

Res won't be a problem for games, you can always use 1280*800 (assuming you are looking at 20"/22" screens) and have it stretched and it doesn't look at all bad, just a little softer like a CRT image. If you're looking at 19" widescreen, then 1440*900 won't stress out a 7600 GT either.

5:4/4:3 screens - they almost don't make sense after using a widescreen. If you want to cover all bases, get one with a 4:3 mode just for the odd old game that doesn't support widescreen.

Thanks to all for your replies, widescreen it is then! I'm probably going to go for a 19" because my room is far too small for me to be able to put in anything bigger, it will look way to silly! Thanks once again for all the input, time to buy methinks :D

why must i be tempted with TFT screens :(, i really really want a 22"WS but i've seen how it disrupts counterstrike 1.6 which i'm a hardcore gamer of and still play competitively and i'm also concerned that it won't be able to keep up (refresh wise)!

just bought the 2407 and I would never go back, I had a 19" widescreen before that and that was good also, every monitor before that was a regular and I never liked them.

Someone said wordprocessing etc is not as good on widescreen, I beg to differ, I get 2 editable full pages up on my widescreen and it couldn't be bettered by a regular monitor.

Widescreen is the way fwd.

I had this dillema when i was looking at a new monitor. Got a 20.1 inch NEC 20WGX2 and i wouldn't go back. Most new games support widescreen res and most older ones can be made to. Theres a list of games that can support wideascreen gaming but i can't for the life of me remember the web address, anyone else?

kmistry, if you can afford it go for a 22" believe me it won't look silly, it will look fantastic. No matter how small your room is, with a 22" lcd your universe is huge!!! :p

ps for the graphics card question, you can always play in the smaller widescreen res's it will still look good, and after all you would expect your screen to see you through a few video card upgrades would you not?

Thanks to all for the input, just ordered : OcUK Value Hanns-G HW191D 19" Widescreen LCD Monitor - should be here tomorrow cant wait! Had to order a separate DVI cable as well as I hear this doesn't come with one, bu that's no biggy! Can't wait to install it and finally rid myself of this 15" TFT that I have had for donkey's years!

The Hanns G is a lovely monitor, look for the massive thread on it in here. I have, but it will shortly be relegated to the second monitor, as I have the belinea 22" on order. it looks good, performs very well (I never noticed a jot of ghosting or tearing in games, and I'm primarily an FPS player), and is a not too shabby price, either.

you'll love it :D
