Right guys, my new laptop is due this week, spec in sig, Im trying to work out whether to stick with the devil I know (Vista Home Premium x64) or shift to Win7 HP x64. I have the upgrade disc sitting here just not quite sure which way to go.

So far my thoughts are running on the following lines
VISTA
-tried and tested
-drivers work fine
-no software issues
-relatively high boot footprint

WIN7
-better out the box optimisation
-lower memory footprint
-potentially faster
-possible driver issues (Nvidia!)
-software not 100% yet /not at SP1 stage!

What do you guys reckon and why?

I love win7 over vista and glad i chose to upgrade id go for it!

Everything is just simple! a lot of addons i like , a little bar on the start bar (on the bottom right) that takes you direct to the desktop i was always using winkey and D though its probs just me but don't find win7 faster on reboot. but its for sure quicker once its loaded

Only driver issue i have is for this:

PCI bus 10, device 3, function 2 - Base system unit!

i've ran sys update and it found one but still left with this :(

I doubt you'll have many problems with W7. Now is the time to go for it (new computer)

No point installing Vista, all your apps and customizations and then sit wondering if W7 would have been a better option.

i love windows 7, seriously, never been so impressed with a microsoft OS.

I have nvidia drivers and no issues what so ever, everything runs like a dream and runs better than Vista, i want to play about with the XP virtualisation but i have found no need to yet.

totally worth the money if your are running any prior versions of Windows imo.

Although buying Windows 7 gave me one regret though, and that regret was why the hell did i buy a copy of Vista last year... i was going to use it on one of my other machines but i seriously want them all to have windows 7 :p

I finally bit the bullet today and it's just brilliant, hasn't crashed once. All but my sound drivers were found automatically, simply superb.

Tbh windows 7 is just vista SP3.... So your not at SP1 argument is invalid.... And drivers are pretty much identical between windows 7 and vista... Therefore there are no bad points... Therefore you should buy it...

My logic is undeniable...

Windows 7, no doubt.

SP1 argument is a red herring as it's closely related to Server 2008 which has been around and Service Packed already.

Gone from XP (missed ****y Vista out) to Win7 64bit and I love it. Found nothing yet that won't work (I'm even running Rome Total War - 2003) and it's so nice to have a snappy fast desktop.
Gets my thumbs up! :D

heh, iRobot :p

Many Vista drivers do work fine in W7, sound drivers seem the most fussy

Go for 7

Mp4, chipset drivers?

Hi bleed,

Win 7 found it via the win update but it found one thing and not the other! so i went to the Sony website and it's not on there either ... so ill just pretend its not there for now and look later

Who makes the chipset?

run cpu-z, it'll say

then get the latest drivers from their site.

if it's intel, then just use this...

google
majorgeeks intel chipset

You know you could put a 'show desktop' button on your taskbar, next to start, since like.. Win98 or something?

Either way, as for the topic - I was one of the few that got on fine with Vista, however Win7 is an improvement and I have upgraded both of my machines to it myself.

I have a few system stability issues on my Dell Laptop with Vista x64.

Is 7 really worth an upgrade though? Advantages and Disadvantages of W7 aside - is it worth upgrading from Vista HP x64? I could understand from XP..

I'd hold off regardless until a service pack is out; but I've read a lot of good things.

windows 7 all the way i installed it on 5 custom machines no problems at all very good product!
