Hi guys,

With the new car looking that little bit sportier than the SEi, I'm tempted to get an aftermarket alarm/immobiliser fitted to stop any scrotes that might try and have away with it.

One of the worst things about the Rover alarm is the position of the horns. Anyone can reach under the car and disconnect them. Then, once the horns are unplugged, open the car doors and proceed to disable the immobiliser.

I moved the horns on my SEi just in case some chav was looking for a joyride.

Anyway, I know even if I relocate the horns someone will have away with it so I was wondering what protection the Toad offers? Is the immobiliser any good?

I've seen them for £100 on the bay which seems pretty good value for me.

Cheers.

Oh yeah, I'd definitely get it installed professional. I'd do it just for the certification if anything else.

Did you ever get any false alarms?

If it knocks some money off my insurance by having a CAT1 fitted I'll get it done professionally to get the certificate.

If not, that would be great :)

Great stuff guys, thanks very much for the replies :)

I was just thinking, that if the immobiliser is wired to the starter, surely all a thief has to do is short the starter against the battery to turn the engine over.

My main requirement as well as the immobiliser is internal motion sensors. The standard alarms on the 200 series have no motion sensors. The 214 already had an aftermarket alarm installed had sensors so I was happy with that. I have a Laserline alarm here which I guess I could fit temporarily for the sensors until I get round to having the Toad installed.

Ohhh, that's cool Mike. That could cause some major confusion

That immobiliser and a decent steering wheel lock should keep opportunist thieves away.

Do you still have the Rover alarm/immob active?

Spending more on an alarm than you paid for the car = not worth it.

If you don't want it to be nicked, which is a concern with an older car, get some visual detterants and wire in a cheap immobiliser.

Are you for real Fox? I have a 214, decided eveyone here was right saying not to waste money on it so get a faster car for the same money, and still you say 'don't waste mone on it'.

The fact that my car can be confused with a GSi turbo means absolutely nothing? There've been an alarming number of those stolen recently.

Saying that, the AI606 costs £100. The GSi costs almost 4 times that amount.

hehe, I didn't even notice that, honest! :D

Well, I'll also be getting some form of steering lock so it's doubtful that an opporunist thief will nick it.

No doubt the company who install the alarm will fit the Toad stickers or something... although I don't like advertising the type of alarm/immob I have installed.

So, if that's the case, what about buying new wheels/brakes/suspension for the car?

Shouldn't I do that because the wheels will no doubt be worth more than the car?

To you guys, a car might just be a car. To me, it's a hobby.

Phantom, the AI606 will be the difference between someone driving my car away easily or forgetting about it because it's too much hassle for a quick theft. :)

My car does have an alarm and immobiliser as standard. I think it's CAT2, so I'm guessing that's single point immobilisation.

Don't worry, I'll be getting a steering lock as well. Not going to take any chances with this car :)

Yeah, the number would be excellent, thanks very much. I'm guessing they're based in Southampton?

Adam, good point, but it's not just the alarm I'm after. The immobiliser is much much more important to me!

If someone broke into the car and it didn't have an immobiliser, they would rip the alarm out and drive off.

If someone broke into the car and it had the Toad fitted, they would soon get fed up of the alarm blaring and not being able to start the car, and so run off. Anyway, if I was ever woken up by the sound of my alarm going off, I'd be out the front door quicker than you could say "some **** is nicking my car"! :D

Firestar has a good point, the alarm will pretty much pay for itself really. I can't believe people are actually saying it's pointless to have a decent alarm fitted. What would happen if the car got stolen? I'd have to claim, lose my NCB and be back paying stupid insurance.

Phantom, thank you very much, that's really helpful! Will definitely give him a ring in the near future :)

That's a fair point Fox, and I apologise if I sounded snappy before.

I thought that CAT2 = immobilised at a single point, and CAT1 was mult-point immobilisation.

The standard Rover immob is pretty pants. You wouldn't believe how easy it is to disable if you don't have the horns blaring. I'm going to move the horns from the bumper anyway but still don't trust the Rover immobiliser. I also want motion sensors to stop scrotes from smashing a window and pinching my HU or something.

Of the Rover Turbo's that've been stolen recently, I know two of them have been found with all the running gear gone and one that hasn't been seen since. It had a 214 badge on the back and they still nicked it. That was from outside the guys' house in the daytime... doesn't sound like opportunist thieves does it :)

I can understand what you're saying, but I'd really rather not risk it with the standard Rover system.

Thanks anyway Fox :)

lol, I don't think Si is that stupid :p

You've got a Toad haven't you Si?

There was once a time when Rovers didn't need immobilisers. Nobody wanted to be seen dead in them.
