Went up walking in Callandar today, unfortunately went in the car but couldn't help but notice and be jealous of the amount of people out on bikes. Seeing (and hearing from the top of the hills!) all those big bikes does not help my urge to do my DAS and move up!

Why don't you plan to do it over winter and buy a bike after Christmas, will be cheaper 
You've missed the decent weather now espcially in Scotland , just looked your near my mate who works on boilers by abseiling
I think you'll be after some sort of enduro / adventure bike being were you are, you'll get more use out of it
Have you thought about buying one and using it for the test, I bought my F650 and trailered it to the test centre for p1 & 2 and passed p2 first time easy p1 was a bit different I wasn't listening doh
