Righto. Turned on my PC morning to my BenQ FP241W greeting me with this Christmas themed display of colours.

CLICKY

Monitor set me back best part of £800 when It was first released and has served me well! The weird thing is after 5 minutes of being in use in that state, the monitor flashed and came back to life.

Now this has me worried as I use my PC a fair bit, and would like to know any 24" recommendations you guys have :p

Must be 1920x1200 and be very good at displaying games + movies. So we're talking very fine pixel pitch and high contrast ratios.

I have seen this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-100-SA&groupid=17&catid=510&subcat=, can anyone tell me if it's a good monitor? My samsung 19" is still going strong with 2 dead pixels >5 years so I am more than happy to purchase with them.

Do not sell that monitor, they do not make them like they used to.

That Samsung is a big step down from what you have now.

I'm not selling it... It's the fact I think it's on its way out so need to prepare :p losing a 24" would make my PC unusable! I plan to maybe buy a replacement 24" to put alongside it until it dies :p

Budget... 350? 400? tops. How comes you say the samsung is a step down out of curiocity?

I think its personal option again, I have a Samsung its been faultless apart from sometimes having to turn it off than back on sometimes, seems to be a TFT thing that. In terms of image I can't fault it, I used to have a CRT as well. huge difference.

Might be just some soldering breaking up (thermal cycling does that to cold joints) or then there might be some capacitor which is in final and starts working after warming up.

FP241W is MVA so you really don't want to get TN after that.
You'll recognise it from straight on shots by top being darker while bottom looses deepness of darker shades:

Like EsaT says, you're best avoiding TN panels. Look for something with an IPS or even another *VA panel. As far as having to turn off and back on again being a TFT thing, since when?

Oh well, atleast you guys respect my monitor as one that was worth the money :).

I am going to wait for it to die 100% before opening it up. Father is an electrical engineer so I'm confident he'd be able to fix most issues. Hopefully it is a dry joint or component on the blink. The PC is on 16+ hours a day and then off for a few hours with all windows open (last night it was very cold) so that over a few years is quite a lot of extreme cooling cycles.

re your monitor, my bet is it's a simple cap going, hence it works once heated up.

My dell is doing exactly the same thing at the moment (and has been for a couple of months), i'm trying to get it to last over christmas, then i'll try and replace the cap or and buy a new one if it doesn't work :)

Bad idea, at least for the goal of trying to fix it.
Totally failing components like taking along some "company" for their way to grave.
Same applies to failing soldering especially if it's in any kind power regulation circuitry.

I'm actually looking for a second one of these at the moment lol should have bought two when i could :(

Does anything available now compare? All the 24" monitors available now seam to be dirt cheap!

IPS panels are favoured on here.
I've personally got two of the ones mentioned in OP, I think they are great.
Work well for me with no noticeable input lag.

Saying that I've not had much experience with screens, so I'm perhaps not the most qualified to answer.

I had the BenQ FP241W and while it was nice it used to get very hot and the heat used to get beamed into your face too - not surprising something has been overworked inside that chasis :p

I had to return it though as I could not stand the heat being blasted out the front. A nice aluminium cased screen will do wonders for heat transfer from 360 degrees but it's almost impossible to find an aluminium 24" other than something from Apple since Hazro seem to have vanished :O

Hehe, I love this screen also! One of my best hardware purchases in my life. Cost a fair bit when it was first out £700+ but well worth the money! Axel maybe if I figure out the fault we can talk further? No dead pixels :D

BenQ has said "It seems you have a problem, would you like a quote" but for some reason I don't trust them as I asked them if they could provide details of the suspected issue...

Anyone dealth with BenQ support and/or RMA, if so how did it go?

Anyway, my father ran his own electronic engineering/manufacturing firm for many years so we shall be isolating the fault soon. If it's not something serious like the startup circuit etc it should be fixable.

Heh sorry my post was a bit vague! There is nothing wrong with my one (touch wood) I was just looking for a second one lol

Hope you get yours working again! :D

Yeah I paid around £600 for one at the start of the year, madness really!
