Hey Guys,

Well today I am going to the Apple Store in Belfast and Picking up a brand new Core i5 iMac. This will be my first Apple Desktop but I have a 2006 Macbook so I am quite used to the OS.

Just I want to know if anyone has any tips, trick software...etc When I get the iMac set up?

What's this about 64 bit Mode when you Hold in 64? Is it worth going 64 bit all the time are is not really a finished product yet with software supporting it?

Thanks.

Noticed nothing TBH.
Was in the Belfast store abotu a week ago....jebus but it as busy in there...selling only iPods tho lol

Im running my Mac Pro in 64 bit and the only thing that I have found that doesn't work is... Intel Core Temp Sensors for Hardware Monitor.

Otherwise everything else is fine!

As for setup, get TimeMachine running ASAP. Bloody useful piece of software, saved my Bacon a few times already.

Lucky sod. Was in there today myself and all I can afford is the SL upgrade at £25! Definitely is a busy story. O yes, one thing you have to do is upload some photos of the new beast. Other than that no other tips.

All the latest macs will boot into '64 bit mode' automatically. Holding the 6 and the 4 was only for those macs which had partial 64-bit compatibility... Or thats what I have been lead to believe.

I believe you've been led to believe incorrectly :) Snow Leopard boots with the 32 bit kernel by default (Snow Leopard server doesn't, see the article I link below).

This is a good read.

Yup I got the beast yesterday in the Apple Store. The man seemed a bit taken back when I asked to purchase the Core i5 Version. Anyway I got the iMac + Applecare for £1520 because of Student discounts!

One thing is their anyway to check to see if the Applecare went through ok? I thought I would have got an email saying about the Applecare but I still havent received anything yet =/

The speakers are pretty average but I so pose I am thinking this because I came from a PC which had £120 Logitech Speakers and a Decent Sound card.

Also I only have a 500 Gig Externel Drive atm and I was wondering if though the iMac hard drive is 1TB that I could still use the Externel drive for time machine are does it have to be the same size as the hard drive?

Also here is some Pictures I am still transferring stuff from my PC so sorry for the mess in the pictures!

Looks great, but looks like you get a lot of glare on the screen. Does it bother you at all?

Love these new iMac's though, the design is really spot on. :)

Nah you have a choice of the smaller bluetooth or the USB full keyboard. Personally I love the smaller ones - rarely used the number keys anyways.

I thought all the 27" imacs came with the small keyboard and magic mouse already in the box and if you wanted a bigger keyboard it would have to be an additional extra?

So you'd end up with 2 keyboards rather than just the larger one.

All the new iMacs come with the wireless keyboard as standard - you can only get a wired keyboard option by ordering online at the Apple store and customising the order on the options screen.

(Or by buying one separately of course)
