Can someone please enlighten me as to why mechanical hard drives (eg this particular 3TB on offer) have a SATA3 interface? I'm pretty sure mechanical drives don't come anywhere near hitting the SATA2 bottleneck...

Because the ill-informed think they're faster and buy them for more money or instead of a competitor's SATA 2 drives.

It's a good marketing gimmick.

I was looking for a 2TB drive for movies/music/pictures etc. Something cool 'n' quiet :) I was thinking about the same series that's on offer above..

Thanks for the recommendation. I noticed there's only £1 between the Samsung and WD 2TB at the moment, decisions decisions. Do you know if they both run at the same RPM? The WDs don't specify.

And is the larger platter size of the Samsung's that makes them faster?

I believe they spin at similar speeds.

Not sure why the difference in transfer rate, as they're both 3 platter drives, but it's there.

See this post.

My 4 Samsungs are at the top with the WD at the bottom.
