I was feeling giddy today and seriously considered going for one of the i7 980s.

Then I noticed.

It's not a 980x. It's a 980. Right?

I.e. it's a rehash of the 6-core-but-multiplier-locked 970, like the 990x is a rehash of the 6-core-and-multiplier-UNlocked 980x.

I'm glad I didn't blow a large amount of money on something so sneakily named. I believe a lot of those with LGA1366 motherboards would mistake this CPU for the 980x, and then be disappointed if its locked multiplier limits overclocking performance.

Of course I don't blame Overclockers for it but I think this is a fairly shoddy thing for Intel to do - name a new and inferior product extremely (pun not intended) similarly to a famous, better predecessor. Kind of a bait and switch.

Stop me if I'm wrong. Though if I'm not, could Overclockers please correct the quoted specification of the 980? Its QPI link speed is 4.8 GT/s, not 6.4 GT/s like the 980x had. (See linked specs above)

Still a bargain in my opinion. For a minute or two I've been pondering sticking my 930 on ebay and upgrading... but for the forseeable future at least I just have no need for the extra power. MY 930 is only running at 3.5ghz and I am more than happy with my framerates, don't do video conversion or anything taking vast cpu times. Everything on my system seems to happen instantaneously and the price of the upgrade for me personally would be better spent on other things, but still, £419 for one of these is a bloody bargain :)

Who cares about the extreme edition at this price?! Buy it, run it at 4+ghz, have a PC in the top 1% of fastest PC's on the planet...

The compare between i7 980X verus i7 980 can be found here: http://ark.intel.com/compare/47932,58664 can see the VID Voltage Range is much lower on the i7 980 at 1.300v compare to i7 980x at 1.375v

which makes absolutely zero real world difference.

for all intents and purposes. a 980 is the same as a 980X

the top end multiplier on a 980 is 25

any x58 motherboard will do 200 BCLK
this means that all 980 cpus will have a potential headroom of around 5ghz.
the same as any 980x

all bloomfield chips clock the same
all gulftown chips clock the same.

a 970, 980, 980X, 990X will all clock the same on any conventional air or watercooling.

its only when you go sub zero that the X chips are worthwhile.

you could always wait for bulldozer?
I don't think it will never arrive! :)
