just out of wonder, what price was the Patriot RAM before the reduction?

(I ordered some today, gonna send back my 1333MHz un-opened for a refund hopefully).

whats the catch with the ram ?

edit: you should include that this ram need 1.9 volts to do 1600mhz so amd3+ and i5/i7 is out of the question

Few people online had issues running these modules undervolted, at looser timings, and the kits have been qualified for a number of higher end boards based around P55/X58 chipsets. It is still a good budget option for the BIOS tweakers among us, imho, although I agree that the specification on the shopping page should be more explicit.

why does it needing 1.9v mean you cant use an i5/i7?
will it be ok with an overclocked i3?

(i have 2 pairs of ram on the way to me, the 1600MHz viper + some 1333MHz OCZ, intending to send back or re-sell one pair un-opened...)

If you increase the voltage to the ram on an i5/i7 setup you also increase the voltage supply to the memory controller on the cpu, i think 1.9V breaks i5/i7 chips.

What are the Intel® Core™ i3 processor series DDR3 memory voltage limitations?

Intel® recommends using memory that adheres to the Jedec memory specification for DDR3 memory which is 1.5 volts, plus or minus 5%. Anything over this voltage can either damage the processor or significantly reduce the processor life span.

god dammit. the product info on overclockers says 1.7-1.9v, I guess running it at 1.7v will be ok...? (all the other RAM available is listed as 1.6-1.7v)

(but the intel website also says this??

What is the maximum frequency for DDR3 memory when used with Intel® Core™ i3-500 processor series?

These processors support DDR3 memory with a maximum frequency of 1333 MHz. If faster DDR3 memory is used (such as 1600 MHz), it will be down-clocked to operate at 1333 MHz.

: \

I guess that means at stock settings? Where the base clock of i3 = 133MHz = 10x memory ratio?)

In Intel's books anything over JEDEC spec is an overclock. You should be looking at the XMP profile specification, data sheet of your chosen chipset and motherboard QVL for RAM to see which voltages passed their internal testing. Under i5/i7 the upper limit is about 1.65v, which is what you should undervolt these Vipers to. You should only need the extra voltage to keep the stated C7 timings.

AFAIK on am3 it is fine to run ram voltages over 2V, as the same silicon is used in the ddr3 controllers on the newer chips as the older chips with ddr2/ddr3 support, so it should be fine with ddr2 levels (1.9-2.3 ish).

Well with an i3 I am wondering if I can run the Patriot RAM at:

1600MHz
7-7-7-20
1.65v

if not, I will have to either ask for a refund from overclockers or sell on eBay or members market, brand new and unopened, and order some other 4GB 1600MHz DDR3 which doesn't have silly voltages...

You might need to relax the timings to 888 or even 999 but no one can say for certain without actually testing them. tbh you won't notice a performance difference at relaxed timings on i3 unless you are running memory benchmarks, for normal use the speed difference will be unnoticeable.

This would be rather unlikely for these Vipers on 1.65v or 1.7v - stated in the catalogue/category view - which is their stated minimum voltage. When you lose some juice on the memory, you have to be prepared to either sacrifice the timings, the maximum frequency, or both.
