Today's progress on the Jonny69mobile

I've been threatening to do this for months but I actually put the engine in today. Months and months ago a mate lent me his comedy oversize engine crane some and has been kind enough to let me have it all this time. He has only just managed to break one of his engines so that is my prompt to pull my thumb out my bottom and get it back together.

So this is basically what I was faced with - a multicolour Anglia rolled half out the garage. That's Seth's crane literally DWARFING my car some way in the background. I reckon it could pull an engine out a cross-Channel ferry if he needed it to. I dropped the engine into the car in one go with the gearbox attached, just had to drop the steering linkages off temporarily to give me some more clearance:

I had to jack the front of the car up off the ground and take the front wheels off to clear the MONSTROUS legs on this thing, but here's the engine in and half assembled. One Weber short:

Heheheh, got clearance?

I took an aerial shot to show how my recess comes into play. Now the engine is in the right place the back carb would be mashed into the bulkhead so with the extra inch and a half it is clear and I can get my fat hand behind it to do the bolts up:

Gee I'm bushed...

I also brush painted around the screen so I can pop it in which means I can wait before I spray it. I'll probably bum around in multicolours for a bit and spray it when the weather gets a bit better.

And that pretty much covers it. If I get time I'm going to try and put the rest back together next week, get her fired up and let the neighbours know what they've been missing all this time.

Ooooooh, nice! :D

As probably the only other Anglia owner on the forum, I'm really glad to see you getting progressed on it :D

1600/1760 x-flow? Twin Webers should see that thing fly! :)

What's the front crossmember/suspension on that?

I'm picking up my donor car for my Anglia on Saturday :) Nissan 200SX S13 with CA18DET

Actually there's about 2.5" clearance from the inner wing to the trumpets, it curves away. I think it's the eye-searing red colour that anihilates any photo I try and take

The front end is a Milton world cup crossmember like used on Mk1 Escort rally cars, but Anglia fitment, Anglia steering box and links, Escort RS2000 struts with 2.25" springs and Capri discs. Up top I've got eccentric top mounts to pull the Escort camber angle back in and I heated the steering arms and pulled them back into the right angle to suit the Anglia.

Engine is a 1660 crossflow bottom end, flat-top pistons, ultra thin flywheel, rally cam, full race Cortina head and twin 40's. Should be good for 140hp at a squeeze, not bad for a 40 year old motor with points and carbs

I've got a supercharged 1760 in the works though so watch this space...

It's not too bad actually. The sump is pretty much between the front wheels so as long as I don't hit the bump too fast it's ok. The main problem is those sectioned bumps, while modern cars can straddle them mine is too narrow and too low to do that so I have to go across two of them to keep the middle of the car is clear. It used to be the exhaust that took all the abuse but I've made it all tucked up under the car now.
