Tokyo Olympics 2020

If she really has been struggling then it is quite brave to admit she's suffering. Here timing wasn't the best but perhaps struggling during her first event was the wake up call she needed to come to terms with it.

I know she was compared to Osaka earlier in the thread but there really doesn't appear to be many similarities. Osaka used the mental health 'get out of jail free card' to gain support when she acted like a **** and everyone (players and tennis authorities) turned on her. Weird how her prolonged break away from the game only lasted throughout the clay and grass court seasons, her two weakest surfaces.

Apparently it's now brave and strong to chicken out of your professional obligations. Smh.

Yeah, that's the particularly cringe-worthy aspect of this, it's got the woke world celebrating it as "brave" and "courageous" or as one headline claimed - more impressive than winning...

There isn't anything particularly brave about this when you know full well the media will lap it up and fawn over the decision regardless and it's not better than winning. It's at best an unfortunate decision that needed to be made and at worse a bit of a cop-out that let down her teammates.

Wesley Yang is on point again:

Yeh and people used to execute gays, or get on different buses because of the colour of your skin. SO WHAT

So not everything needs to change. Not everything that was commonplace in the past is toxic and bad.

How you can type so much and just contradict your own posts is an amazing feat.

Its pretty simple to comprehend if you bother to think for a few seconds but no its easier to take it really literally and no understand context. There is a big difference between bailing on your teammates in the middle of an event vs doing it beforehand, giving them time to process it and adjust.

You know, like its OK to cancel a wedding but its somewhat more frowned upon to decide at the alter that you have changed your mind.

I was happy Russia won the team gymnastics, it was the Russian lady Svetlana Khorkina at the 2000 Olympics that started my love for gymnastics, ever since I've always prefered watching the Russians, I think they're far more elegant than everyone else. The Romanians were also incredible, unfortunately, they suffered terrible abuse at the hands of the coaches.
It's fantastic GB got the Bronze, hopefully, it will spark more interest and more funding.

We haven't done as well in the rowing so far, it is usually one of our best events.
I hope we clean up in the indoor cycling again, a large percentage of GB golds come from these events.
The boxers have been doing great so far, there could be several golds for GB.

It's good to see the host nation Japan doing so well, they could finish in the top 3.

You'd hope we get something out of the sports that are highly biased to rich countries

Cycling is such a sport, also... horse dancing... :p

On the flip side gun sports are sandbagged enormously because GB gun laws. Last I heard if you want to practice pistol shooting you need to... do it in another country... with all the paperwork of being a foreigner wanting to use a pistol there. That pretty much obliterates the talent pool for such an event.

Who is this "Russia". Russia are banned. The Russian Olympic Committee won the team gymnastics. No affiliation to a disgraced and banned country. I mean, they are clearly not Russia because if they were Russia they would use the Russian national anthem. Which they don't.

I do love the toothless bans that sports usually dish out as punishment but this one is especially comical.

Squeaky bum time in the women's canoeing. GB guaranteed a bronze but could be gold depending on the last 2 to go.

edit: silver guaranteed, one more to go.

edit2: flipping Australians. Silver it is. :p

Damm it why is all the good events tomorrow for the athletics start from 1am and end at 5am….

It'll only be qualifying though. I'd expect all finals to be evening sessions Japan time which would be 11am onwards here.

edit: not actually checked the times though. For some bizarre reason all swimming finals have been morning time over there which means stupid oclock here.

Possibly due to the swimming being more popular in aus/USA so for max viewing figures are for their morning/evening viewing but middle of the night for us. And like that Google pops up with an article of an roc swimmer complainining about the morning finals for US prime time scheduling.

I 've got some sympathy that athletes have to modify their daily diet. etc. to try and accomodate this , seems there were some tennis players who couldn't cope with the midday 37C heat, too.

Beyond the scheduling times the limited access on free(ish)view from BBC to catch up across all sports isn't garnering my enthusiasm,
is there something in the Olympic ethics code to promotre free access.?

ever since I've always prefered watching the Russians
looking back at the original Russian you can see how (like the rugby players ?) gymnastics became a power sport lacking some of the grace, even nimbleness, predecessors had,
they juxtapose some video of her and Biles

r4pm interview with rowing pundit basically said that since the strict disciplnary training era of redgrave etc. things have slipped, but equally (lottery?) funding on cycling retargetted, we have to accept medals cost money, despite the critique about the russian doping.
