I'm going to Tokyo for a week, it's a work trip but I'll have some free time to explore. What's worth seeing / doing / avoiding?

Well thanks for that, I didn't know 'Google' was a thing.

I asked here as I wanted dialog with people who have been.

What do you like doing typically when you're on holiday, and what are you also passionate about? List off the things you like/love, and Tokyo can cater for just about all tastes. You'll need to narrow it down a bit.

I think he maybe wanted a more personal view of the city, Having people who have done the trip and the tours helps weed out the wastes of time.

I remember a Tenerife trip back in the 80's where one of the tourist attractions was a thousand year old tree called the ICOD (Capital letters for the dramatical effect). The hotel's 'Things to do' section had it as a great trip out so we hired a car and off we went, 3 hours and many wrong turnings later we found a tree in a village square with a tiny shack selling postcards of the tree next to it. Great find, I wish we had had internet back then so I could have asked for suggestions.

I would suggest look for the other thread on here on things to do in Japan as this has been asked a lot in the past.

Personally if I went again at the moment I would be going to see Kamen Joshi at the PARMS building as one of the things I was going to do.

In cities I like parks, museums, architecture and I enjoy walking through cities to explore.

I'm also a geek, so anything that is techy and worth seeing / doing will need to be investigated. I like food too!

Some stuff in here https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18667379&highlight=Japan+trip+notes

Can do day trips to places like Kamakura (giant Buddha) as well a touristy stuff like the robot restaurant.

Thanks, will look through that thread. Kamakura sounds interesting but I'm not sure I'll get the time to take a day trip out of the city.

Spot on

Will check that thread, and am now Googling Karmen Joshi. Thanks :)

Eat LOADS and LOADS of Ramen.

Go to the Tuna market and eat some delicious raw tuna, eat the fatty stuff. O wow.

Go see the sights.

O and eat Ramen. Ichiran, although a chain is worth a visit. You order your meal on a vending machine, get placed your booth and munch away. if you still have soup left, order some more noodles. Only good if there is two or less really though.

Akihabara is worth a visit, few retro gaming shops. But it's really not that nerdy as you'd think. Loads of arcade machines etc though.

We went to a sake tasting night, which was also quite fun.

If you're young, and want to drink. I'd do the Tokyo beer crawl, we had great fun there. A bit 'Brits on Holiday' but mostly full of drunk Aussie/Merican girls. ;)

I went there as a food tourist, and if you're up for eating certain things that are unusual by UK standards, then it'll be absolutely awesome.

Some things to try:

Torisashi - basically raw chicken
Whale - minke, and no, it's a long was off endangered (check Google)
Tsukiji fish market (rumoured to be moving, no idea if that's happened yet) - go there to see an incredible array of edible sea life, and also eat there. I would avoid eating in the restaurants outside of the market as they're really tourist traps and do not seem to sell the fresh stuff. Inside the market is where the truly fresh stuff is
Baby conger eel - very short season, so possibly not around when you're there, but they look like fat, translucent rice noodles.
Izakaya - just the name for little drinking dens, selling awesome snack food. Snack food like barbecued chicken heart, liver, battered cartilage, lots of other tasty stuff...

Finding places that serve some of the above require you to get friendly with some locals - I could not have found them without their help, and unfortunately I have zero recollection of the location of where I tried them.

Techy stuff is everywhere. Akihabara is the main electronics market. I didn't go though, so can't comment on it.

Prepare yourself for the metro at rush hour. Honestly the best tourist experience in Tokyo imo. FIGHT!
