Tomahawk Steak - How do I cook it?

Hey folks,

I've got a 42oz Tomahawk steak coming to room temperature at the moment and I'm wondering what's the best way to cook this to get it to a medium rare finish?

Any help is appreciated!
 
I presume this is one of the Morrisons ones for sale on Fathers Day?

All the news articles seem to say;

"Darren recommends cooking the steak by frying and sealing it first, for around three minutes each side, before browning in the oven for a further 25 minutes for a medium steak."
 
How thick is it? If it's under 1-1.5" thick then you could probably do it all in the pan. If any thicker you'd have to do as above and finish it in the oven. Going to be hard without a temp probe though.
 
Yeah, lack of temp probe will make things tougher if you don't have one.

Personally I'd "reverse sear" it - so you cook it in the oven at a very low temperature and then sear it in a hot pan. There are tons of guides online that will give you rough temps/timings based on the thickness of the steak.

Be careful that your oven temperatures aren't wildly out though.
 
Thanks folks, I've seared it first in the pan and I've placed it in the oven at gas mark 7 as the above post suggested.
I do have a meat probe thing so what temperature should I be looking at for a medium rare?

Is it actually a digital temperature probe or is it one that you leave in/just shows "doneness"?

If digital I'd take the meat out of the often at or before 50C (which is normally rare) and rest it for about 10 minutes. It'll come up to medium rare whilst it's resting.
 
A tomahawk steak really needs to be cooked on a BBQ/over coals until it's internal temperature reaches 50 - 55c followed by 10 mins resting.

I wouldn't sear it/oven cook it personally.
 
Whilst I love BBQ myself there's absolutely no reason you can't get an awesome steak by cooking it properly in a pan :)

I find bone in steaks a little difficult to do in a pan and getting the meat flat on the surface can be more tricky depending on the cut
