Tomb Raider: Could Crystal Dynamics do it?

The legacy of kain games were made by them and they're also along the same lines as tomb raider. They were good so there's a chance this will turn out ok. Personally I'm not really a fan of tomb raider, never really got into them.

I hope so, it does look good, i liked the first 3x with all the exploring and puzzle elements, this one is supposed to be going back to those roots so im looking forward to it. :)

I loved the first two Tomb Raider games, but the follow-ups never held my interest (TR3 was just too damn frustrating), and after Core's last "effort" I'd almost given up on Tomb Raider. Anyway judging by the screenshots and footage of TRL, it looks like this could be the best one yet. The engine looks impressive, and Lara looks like she's gonna be a joy to control. I just hope it has a decent storyline too.

You have got to remember the reason tomb raider was so big and made a name for itself was at the time their was nothing like it but in todays market its just another 3rd person adventure

Which is why Eidos has handed the franchise to new developers who they feel will bring Tomb Raider more up to date and not just more of the same-old.

I'm quite looking forward to it :) but then again I've always had a soft spot for both the games and the genre really.

Im pretty sure it should be ok.. but im not expecting anything much. After playing the beta a few months back it has some nice touches but just feels a bit old now,and hasnt really tried anything new. Although i am aware they have been polishing it aplenty over the past few months.

But then what do i know :P

The Optimist in me is saying it'll be great: the new devs giving it a fresh new feel.

The Cynic in me is saying that it'll be a carbon copy of the first two games: the devs trying to play it safe by going back to what made the first games great, and succeding brilliantly!

Thus, a dilema!

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1, 2 and Defiance are on my list of top games so if CD's past record are anything to go by, then the new Tomb Raider will be class.

I'm looking forward to it!

from what iv seen of the videos it doesnt look that great. still using the stepped prince of persia style of gameplay. where you get the delay as every action is gridmapped out. this was fine at the time of the first 2, after all they were so cutting edge at the time they were breaking new ground and were both fantastic games. but in todays gamemarket I think a bit more control is needed. and the graphics dont look next gen at all.

but its still not finished so heres hoping they can bring the series back on track

So it's 1 big polygon square for a running jump?

I'd be suprised as its running on a modified Kain : Defiance engine and i cant remember anything similar happening in that. I really cant see it behaving like the original in that respect, but hey i may be wrong. If thats the way it does play, i suspect its been a decision made by the developers thinking thats what people want in a Tomb Raider game rather than any faults with the game engine itself. The thing is though, some of the moves have to be context specific and so i suppose may have to be "gridded" out in that respect. It would be very hard to allow access to all of Lara's actions by simple button presses, it would also make the game pretty difficult in my opinion.

check out the latest 1up video, its got a fair bit of video footage from the new game. I think they are going back to its roots with this one, hence the 1 big polygon square for a runnung jump thing. shame I think. the only thing in its favour is the needless dying over pixel perfect jumps. but i feel it detatches you from the game

I loved the Original, and funnily enough its the only one i have ever finished. If this plays much like that i'll not mind in the slightest. I think i mentioned this in the other thread, but Tomb Raider 10th Anniversary is coming out on the PSP as well as Legend. I think it should be pretty good as well.

You said it.. And of course the 10th aniversary will be a lot better as its a PSP exclusive :P And made by my own fair hands..

the movement of Lara is totally different in Legend. The old grid based movement system is a thing of the past.It is no longer the case of 'tapping back' on the gamepad to line up a jump anymore ;)The controls and movement should be a lot more fluid in this game, and there is also a few neat new moves such as being able to kick/punch enemies up close. Also the grappling hook can be used against enemies by pulling them or objects onto them to kill em off.
The game gets a very good preview on gamespot, and they are fussy at the best of times
