So after a couple of informal meetings last week followed by an interview today, I find out tomorrow if I've managed to get a PhD position at Bristol University.

If I do I'll be working on vascular biology, mainly with pharmacological methods of preventing the damage and failure of vein grafts used in bypass surgery (50% fail 10 years after surgery!).

Really excited about this, I hope I get it :)

Good luck mate, is it an integrated one or a normal 3 year deal

Good luck :)

I'm just finishing mine - been a good experience overall I'd say. I'm going to continue in academia aty least for a post-doc (assuming this EU project gets accepted - it's into the final stage of selection).

PHd pulls chicks!

Ha! On what planet? Book me a ticket would you?

Nerds do not get the poon. Well, not over regular joes anyway (ie people with a real salary :p)

That's the major drawback for doing a PhD for me at the moment. I'd love to do one in the future when I can both afford it and explore what I want to.

Best of luck OP.

When's your viva Duff-Man?

would be interested in chatting to you, i work in a cardiac intensive care. your work will be quite interesting, plus if you need any heads up to current nhs practices, maybe i can help.

I'm lucky enough to be going in for one that is sponsored by the BHF (British Heart Foundation). Happens to be one of the best paying sponsorship bodies in the UK and it is tax free too. Not in it for the money though ;P

Look around (findaphd.com is a good start) and you'll find a lot of sponsored projects. Most people these days won't be self-funding their first PhD as it's almost impossible to do so, coming straight out of university.

yeah www.jobs.ac.uk is a good option too. But also look at mailing groups for certain areas, where I got my PhD offer from

What department is that based in?

Applications for PhDs are rediculously competitive at the moment, so best of luck :)

It comes under the Pharmacology & Physiology department at Bristol, I'd be working the in the Cardiovascular research department at the BRI :)

Aye, I managed to get in touch with my potential supervisor through university contacts, the PhD wasn't advertised anywhere it just happened to come up in conversation!

My last paycheque will be the end of February, so I really need to hand my thesis in by then, or soon afterwards. The exact date of the viva will depend on how long it takes the external examiner to get around to reading the beast, but I'd imagine late April or early May.

If this EU project goes ahead then I should have a salaried position as soon as I have handed in my thesis. If not... well I'll probably go on the dole while I look for another good project (hell if smackheads can do it, why can't I?! At least I'll be doing something vaguely productive - continuing my current research, writing papers etc).

Yeah, the lack of cash is the main drawback to a PhD although we do 'have it good' in this country compared to most of Europe, and the US. I imagine it's harder to go back to a PhD once you're used to having a real salary. Coming straight from undergrad / masters it's not so bad, as it's another pay bump. It's just a bit annoying being significantly out-earned by all your friends. Not having to pay council tax helps a bit though!

Just out of interest, how much have you been paid for the last 3 years? I know university funded projects are horribly underpaid (ranging from 9-13k).
