Presuming that if I used this abroad it would cain my data usage?

No reason for it to use data, maps are stored on the phone and GPS doesnt use cell data, just turn off data romaing to be sure. I used TomTom in mexico for 3 weeks like this without incurring a single charge.

Could try Skobbler or Freenav, they allow maps to be stored locally
