TomTom ONE Boot-up freezes

Don't know if this should be in "Hardware", but we're talking specifically car equipment so...

Anyway... my new TomTom ONE freezes during boot-up sometimes after it has been hooked up via USB to my computer and using the "My ONE" feature. The freeze up is easily fixed by poking the reset button (but I lose some of the settings when I do that). And yes, the internal battery has always been fully charged, so it's not that. And yes, I've disconnected it from USB cleanly although maybe I'm doing that wrong?

So I'm curious if this is a normal quirk with the ONE or if there may be just a problem with how the drivers installed on my computer. It is a pretty outdated laptop with Win2K (just convenient to use the old lappy for this purpose).

Thanks and Cheers

p.s. The search function appears to be missing from the forums, so sorry in advance if this has been talked about before.

v1 or v2 Tomtom one?

I have v1 and hook it up to my computer all the time using the tomtom home application, can you try it on a xp/vista pc to see if that makes any difference?

Do you click the safely remove hardware button before unplugging? Used to be a trait of 2k that drove me crazy.

Cheers

Actually it's version 4 according to the "Show Version" function. The App is 6.560, OS is 1713 and Boot is 5.05.

Well I've tried different ways. If I use the "eject device" function from within the Home application, then Win2K complains immediately that the device has been "removed wrongly" (maybe what you're talking about?). I've also tried just quitting and unloading Home and then "removing device" via the Win2K notification area. In all cases I've shut down the "My ONE" feature first of course.

But in all cases, I still get the boot problem when I start it up on it's own (unconnected to computer). But there never is a boot problem if it hasn't been connected to the computer just before... so it's something wierd with that.

One of my WinXP machines is majorly cluttered right now and the other has some registry problems that interfere with installs (been just lazy about fixing those). But if this boot-up thing is something that is not normal for the ONE then I guess I'm gonna just need to get one of those machines in proper order and try it there.

Thanks

Thanks. You mean "General Discussion"? I'll sift through there to find it. I hope that my sifting doesn't cause too much additional load.

EDIT: Doh. Oh you mean the thread is about the search function problem... I read that wrong... ok so I won't be sifting :)

I had this trouble with mine and it was due to the memory card. Took it back to shop and they had had loads back with dodgy memory cards. Try another memory card if you've got one spare.

I used to gte freezing with mine, although not only after connection to a PC. Updated the software on it and the problem went away. Cant remember what version I went from and to, because I sold it to my dad when i bought a Rider, but he hasnt had a problem with it since.

Ok, that might make sense, because when disconnecting from the computer, the ONE is also disconnecting-as-a-flashdrive... so, maybe the flashdrive part of that process gets foobered (or the SD card itself is foobering). That could well be OS related too in that it might work better under XP. Thanks.

I think that TomTom Home may have updated the software on the flash, but maybe not (the update was very brief). I'll look into that in more detail and make sure it's running on the latest version. Thanks.

Sometimes mine does this, i have all the updates on it so dont think that will fix it.

I just take the memory card out, push a pin in the reset button and its fine afterwards

Have you upgraded the firmware to the latest version ?

I use the TomTom One extensively and have only had it freeze on startup twice since I got it. Needed the reset button to fix it. It hasnt crashed on the last two firmwares I have had on it, only on the one it came with from the factory.

I have not been able to find a resource specifically for firmware updates on the TomTom website. My understanding is that the TomTom Home application only does higher level updates. Where did you get these firmware updates?

You take the mem card out while it is still turned on (before reseting)? Does this prevent the reset from being a problem in terms of lost settings? I always lose some (but not all) settings after a reset... minor hassle, but gets tiring to correct the same stupid settings over and over any time I want to do something via TomTom Home.

Thanks guys for all the info. So it's apparently just a minor quirk (maybe to do with SD cards?). It's a great little navigator... sleek and stylish too
