At first you think, meh. Seen it before. But try write out your initials, or funky patterns (as below) and bask in your musical talent.

A vertical strip represents the 7 notes of a scale. Therefore if you select the bottom left square, and select the square 6 notes above it, you will realise they are infact the same note, except they are at a different pitch.

Since they are all notes of the same scale, they will all sound nice together. It isn't so easy on a real instrument :p

It begs the question why isn't this made into a 'real' instrument? So the musician can drag a stylus across the grid, altering the tune as he goes.

I've just had a go and made quite a nice 'track' with it, although as you say it's much easier than doing the same on a Piano :)

It would be great if it could record what you did and allow you to download :)

Whilst the grid represent one set of 7 notes at varying pitches, there are actually 12 musical notes in total.

There are many, many different scales and keys to create music in. To have that variety and scope for creativity, you need all 12 notes. A grid with all 12 notes would be very difficult to use since if you played any of the 5 notes outside of the scale you were using, it would sound vile (imagine mashing random keys on a piano).

In summary, whilst the grid is useful for the note choice on offer, it will never be as 'easy' to use as an extant instrument if you wish to be more creative :)
