I've got an E4300 on the Asrock Dual VSTA running at 285 bus at 2567MHz, and after an hour of Orthos coretemp reports it's only at 40 degrees...with the stock cooling fan. Is this right? Or should I be worried I have a dodgy chip sensor?

At idle its at about 20 degrees.

To the OP: If coretemp reports it i wouldn't be worried, what is your room temperature, if its above 20 C then it might mean a bad sensor inside the cpu, then you can try using the mainboards sensor like the one in bios...
If your room temp is like 15C or something i wouldn't be worried at all, even though it has the stock cooler, core 2 duo's are very cool...

As Core Duo's have a sensor in each chip, the chances on the both being bad are pretty much zero.. To be honest even if 1 was bad, it should fail intel's quality control, as the sensor is used to stop the chip burning out in the event of heatsink/fan failer.

Anyway, use something like TAT, which will show the temperature of each core, that way you can be sure its right.

Thanks all.

Just downloaded TAT and it's reading at 55 degrees now after three hours of Orthos, where Coretemp is telling me 41. One of them must be wrong...

I thought they read from the same place?

what version of coretemp?

Hi khimbar,

I think the e4300 has a different thermal sensor to the other Core2 Duo chips, Core Temp isn't working properly with the e4300, its the same with a few other apps however TAT still seems accurate, go with that.
