Too-ing and Froo-ing

I would save up and get a X5650 Xeon. This gives you six cores, perfect for Battlefield. I would then get a 980ti, or if you're trying to save a refurb 970.

I wouldnt its a reference cooler and you will probably find it too loud. I had one and it was rather loud/hot but didnt bother me as I went SLI and added an AIO cooler to it. If going for a 970 and not going the SLI route then get a custom cooled one. Nice price but only if going SLI.

Ok thank you for ruling that out.

What do you mean 1440p with VSR?

Virtual Super Resolution. Essentially enables you to game at a higher level of detail than your monitor would otherwise be able to show.

The best thing I can think to explain it would be imagine a zoomed in photo on your phone or something, and how as you zoom out the picture quality gets more crisp. VSR allows you to select 2560x1600 or even 4k by rendering the game at a higher resolution and zooming the image out to fit your screen.
Iv been using it for serious Sam 3 lol, it makes a wonderful improvement.
The only downside is that 144hz may not be supported at 1440p vsr but you can probably get 100hz?
Someone else can fill me in here?

Is there a guide for this?

You won't need it just makes sure you have catalyst 15.7 drivers, go into catalyst control centre and find the option to enable vsr in the monitor bit, then when you play your games higher resolutions will become available. You can also set your desktop to 1440p if you wish.

second hand 290/290X, or a 390.

I wouldn't recommend a 970 over a 290X/390 right now. The AMD drivers have improved a lot over the last year or so and the 290X is ahead of the 970 and closer to a 980 now.

Even my 7950 crossfire can beat a 970 and comes close to a 980 so that is also the cheapest upgrade option for the OP.

THIS. Even JayzTwoCents (a self admitted nvidia fan) admitted that he can't recommend a 970 over a 390.

Hi all.

Please, please help. Im reading myself in circles here.

I currently own a machine with a i7 920 chip running at 4Ghz and a AMD 7950.

I waited for the fury cards to surface but Im underwhelmed by them.

I did think a 980ti was the way to go, but, i have a BenQ 24" 1080p monitor so dont really need any 1440 or 4k resolutions, yet.

I do want a new graphics card, im noticing my 7950 starting to struggle with certain games. At the moment I mainly play BF4. But will be intrested in fallout 4 and other games going forward.

My question is, which card would you people suggest? Is a 980ti overkill would a 980 g1 or msi 980 do me, or is another card better?

I know its a bit of a vague open question, but, im driving myself mad here. Im interested in seeing a notable jump in graphics and fps, too (justify the spend haha)

Thanks

You should always get something better and not go for one that is adequate. This way it will last you longer. I would also suggest you flog off your 920 for a Xeon westmere x5650. They run cooler and faster and is compatible with most lga 1366 boards =]

I was quite happy with my chip for now. But will consider this thanks.

The 920 is a great chip, I had mine for 5 years and only recently upgraded. There is nothing wrong with it, I wanted to get some money out of it before the price drops any lower. Those x5650's can be had for around 50 quid and will further the life of your lga 1366 platform. For me personally, I think it is the best bang for buck chip currently and you get 2 additional cores, which will be handy for future gaming. BF4 for example already benefits from having additional cores.

When I choose 144hz my monitor displays "out of range"

Just sold my 1080p monitor but was running it with a 980. It does the job.

Just upgraded to a 1440p monitor so the 980 (which still copes pretty well) is being sold with the intention of picking up the 980TI

Go for a 980ti, plenty of games will stress it @ 1080p & >60fps. If you buy both GPU & monitor with this budget you'll just end up half-assing both.
