Too many intake fans?

Hi All,

I’m just setting up a new (to me with now old tech) rig and as I didn’t want to purchase a new case, I have have modified my old one by removing one side of the hdd rack to get the dual gtx980 cards in. Whilst I was at it I was wondering if it was worth utilising the redundant 5.25” bay for an additional 140mm intake fan? (Slight modification required).

The current (original) setup of this old Antec 300 case consists of (see pics):
Intake: 2 lower 120mm fans and 1 side 120mm
Exhaust: 1 upwards facing 140mm fan and 1 rear facing 120mm fan.

Looking at the first pic, the red arrow shows the proposed addition 140mm intake fan slaved in position but I thought I’d ask here if the voices of experience thought it was really worth it. It will be filtered and shrouded in much the same way that the lower 2 are.

The stock case design has a positive intake pressure so this will further increase that but maybe by too much? Spec wise, ignore the EK cooling block on the CPU as that’s going and being replaced with an NH-D15. Board is an ASUS X99 Sabertooth, i7 5930 and 2 GTX980ti.

Any advice welcomed.
Regards
Joel.

Don't see how it's going to harm anything. Better more intake than exhaust.

Positive filtered air will push case air out of any gap in the case and help reduce dust build-up assuming all intake air is filtered.

I've always held the belief of getting the hot air out of the box.
Some intake yes of course but I run negative pressure .

You should have intake fans at the bottom / front of the case creating positive pressure. Hot air rises and should exit at the top, it's ok having a rear / top fans to remove heat build up in that area, however it's the intake ones that are important.

Thanks for the advice guys. Unfortunately I don’t have the option to add more exhaust fans. I think I’ll leave it for now and when it’s up and running, I’ll do some airflow and temp testing to see what (if any) difference it makes.

You really only need one intake fan and one exhaust. Having said that, I see that your psu will probably be facing up so maybe two intake fans. Sure you can add more but it won't make much difference. If there is a filter on the front of the case then you can add more fans to ensure there is positive pressure. Why not? Positive pressure really only matters if your main intake is filtered, otherwise it doesn't really matter.
