I've only recently got into PC hardware etc. and I'm planning my first build, but the sheer number of motherboards is daunting.
Especially when i don't understand things like chipset etc. ...yet.

I just need a motherboard that'll support 775 socket, a couple of HDDs, RAID, a couple of opticals, onboard sound will do, a fair amount of USB, maybe a firewire for good measure and thats about it. I'll be buying a graphics card so no need for integrated graphics.

Are there any "favourites" that people usually go for when getting a motherboard? Or are there any that people would recommend me?

For every person that will say buy brand x, you will get a person saying there experience with brand x is rubbish, they won't touch it again and you should buy brand y.

What are you looking to use the PC for as no point speccing out a top of the range board with multiple gpu support if going to use for Browsing and Mail.

Personally I tend to stick to Asus Boards for my home servers when I want reliability and DFI for my Games Rig where I want performance.

I'll be using it for a lot of browsing, some (amatuer) music making (maybe I should get a soundcard :/), quite a few games (although no hardcore gaming) uni work.
ie nothing major, but nothing minor either.

My budget is...not a lot, I haven't set a budget yet, but a ballpark figure would be, no more that 600 maybe? (for the whole system not just the mobo!) I've no idea it'll probably be flexible.

I just wanted a couple of HDDs in a RAID 0. It'll be my first build I don't want to overcomplicate and overprice it for myself with nested RAID and tons of HDDs etc.

cheers, thank you.
Just incase I have to bring my budget down, are there any cheaper ones that accomadate the things I mentioned? or will I be comprimising on quality?

Also would you normally spend roughly equal amounts on a mobo and a CPU or is the CPU usually more?
