There are words everywhere saying this and that, this is better, that's crap and so on. I would really like some human advice from people that have done the tests themselves and have proof born through "play". I have an 8800GTS 320Mb. I like games like GRiD, Crysis*, Stalker, FSX and soon Dead Island. I have decided to upgrade my P35DQ6 to something P45 or X48, my Q6600 is going to be dumped for a Q9450. Based on evidence, should I consider a pair of 4870's or a single 280? I would like to upgrade to 1920 x 1200 one day but am happy with my 226BW for now.

*I have stopped playing Crysis as the 8800GTS is a waste of my time.

Thank you

I would say go for the x1 4870 for now. Should be fine on a 22" TFT. When you do come to get a 24" screen, perhaps see how the 4870 runs (there are plenty of benchmarks that show it can play games at that resolution) and maybes buy a second for CrossFire.

I have recently purchased a 24" screen, and on my current card (in sig) I can play GRID, etc ok. I can't have any filtering on though.

Saying as the new 4870 totally beats an 8800GT (which is faster than our cards) I think you'll be ok. :)

Hope that makes some sense. But I think the 4870 paired with your Q9450 on a P45/X48 board will be very nice indeed!

Don't bet a p45 get a X38 or X48 then if you do go for cross fire you will have 2 x16 pci-e slots.

Why not a P45? I thought the Asus P5Q was an ace overclocker and a good upgrade over my P35DQ6. I was also, correct me if I'm wrong, that no GFX card can get anywhere near maxing out a x8 PCI lane. I figured I would change my mobo a/ to upgrade and b/I'm not sure whether it's my mobo or my Q6600 that won't allow me to overclock.

Firegod, thanks for the heads up. A single 4780 sounds like a plan. What do you think to buying 2 for CF right now?? I want the upgrade to last 2 years

I think you'll get 2 years out of the 4870 tbh. I've had this G80 GTS since 7th Jan 2007, so it's lasted nearly like a year and a half. :)

However, for the price right now on the "this week only" for the PowerColour card you could get x2 for £352.48 inc.VAT. Which is a great price!

I've just this minute put my order in for x1 4870. :D I think perhaps if you want it to last then CF on the X48 mobo would be your best choice.
