Was looking at this method for gpu crossfire where the board has one space between pcie connectors

I would be using a riser
It looks risky. I could support the rear by a wire to the top of the case?

In the picture the gpu is literally attached just buy is i/o plate

No no no, it will vibrate and it should be secured from both ends if in this position and. x16 pcie risers are not safe to use, none of the good brands make them and the one of online markets can damage gpu or mob

I would not risk it with 280x if that's what you have, do you have mATX mob? They are not really good for Xfire, so better option would be to get new mob or get equivalent 1 gpu

No It is a x58 full board.. With its idiotic slot placement
I managed to get it working as I thought it was spent

I've only seen one case that caters for this kind of sideways angle and that was specially designed (Raven RVZ01).

Having a single slot between cards should be fine. It's a little hot, but, better than nothing!

Don't use risers especially for gaming, mining is different in that respect.
Take it you already have 2 GPU's? if you needed another one consider getting a reference blower design?

A side fan or good airflow will help.

I'll shelve the riser idea and just try and force a little more of a gap between the cards
Yeah I already have the cards

I don't see the problem with using a riser as long as you get a powered one. The main risk with them is drawing too much power through them, which is avoided with a powered one.

I also think the positioning of the card is fine as long as you can find some way to support the other side.
