Tool for un-doing nuts on wheel?

Bonjour,

Need to take my alloys off to change the callipers and pads, but I can't get the wheel off; the knuts have been tightened up to the - well, knuts! Problem being, the actual knuts are recessed in the wheel, so the tool I use can't be much wider than the ****. Some sort of power tool has obviously been used to take it off, as I can't create enough leverage to get it off!

I'd like to get it off by tomorrow evening, so can anyone recommend a tool that I can pop in to a shop and buy?

Amusingly enough, I don't have a massive bar to put on the end of it! And it's just a cheap Halfords socket set, so I'd probably end up bending the tool :p

Don't really have the tools to sand down the wheel brace, nor do I think there's enough material on the wheel brace to sand down... We're a mechanically retarded family, which I'm trying to change ;)
 
Go speak to your neighbours. Someone may have one suitable.

Or go for a drive out and see if you see a AA Man etc who may be able to help.
 
get an extendable wheel brace :) Once extended you can undo most nuts even ones slammed on with an air gun.

You can also get long sockets in either metric or imperial that will go in there as they look recessed a long way. Both can be got at local motor factors.

A regular socket or ideally an impact socket (I think these are stronger and can be used with a windy gun altho not 100% they are black BTW) and a breaker bar. Like your socket rachet but about 2 foot long and has no ratchet ....
 
The rack impact wrenches are really good. But if your halfords socket fits you just want to buy a big breaker bar. Maybe need a 3/8" to 1/2" adaptor. They can't be that tight. But if your just trying a ratchet I can see that would be hard work!

You can get them in Wickes extremely cheaply - I'm sure they're about £2!
 
Halfords sell alloy wheel sockets which are a few inches long and also have a nylon sleve to protect the alloy from damage. I use one of these along with a wheel brace that has a socketed end, but a breaker bar would also do the trick.

If you're really desperate, park next to a wall, put the wheel brace on the nut, then using the wall for support, stand on the wheel brace with one foot, lift the other foot off the ground and bounce up and down. Be careful though.
