Okay ive only built one or two systems so am really a novice and found myself muddling through both as best I could... I dont want my soon to be build a similar experience so I ask you more experienced chaps...

What tools would you recomend to have when tackling a new system?

Since I fix PC on the side now and again, my tool kit is:

Largish plastic tweezers

Electricians Phillips No. 2 + 1 screw driver, although these are 1000v VDE insulated I use them to protect the components from me zapping them.

Never bothered with anti static wrist band but each to their own.

Selection of screws and mobo stand offs (still have some old plastic suspension ones)

Small maglite to see into dark corners.

Finally try to work systematically so you do not need to take the mobo out and in because you cannot connect the 4/8 pin +12v cable, that kind of thing.

Not so keen on magnetic screwdrivers myself, use a small blob of bluetack on the end of the screwdriver for a foolproof way of holding a screw on ready to insert or to collect an errant one!

Best tool is patience (and lots of it) and if you have to force something... don't! Step back and have another look, then try again!

to bang your head against when you forget to plug the GFX card power cable in...

seriously a clear space (such as a clear desk) is useful, the amount of parts i have broken because i have been building a pc with the case resting on my lap. if you have a screwdriver thats none magnetic if you find a magnet you can make quickly make the screwdriver magnetic, the case speaker on some old cases is useful for this ;)
