tool to join movies (side by side)

I have three short AVI files I created from images using mencoder (I think). I'd like to join them together so they play side-by-side (well, ideally arranged top to bottom).

Does anyone know of a free tool that can do this, so I don't have to combine each original source image and re-encode?

Actually went ahead and used the CImg library and a few lines of c++, since I didn't check here quick enough, but thanks!

As far as I know iMovie couldn't do what he's asking, not putting them 'on top' of each other.
