Yes MCE itself. As long as you have your power management in the bios set to S3 sleep mode MCE should work, you only need the MCE standby tool if you have problem hardware/drivers.

Any solution depends on what bit of the Sleep cycle doesn't work - waking up to record, recording and going back to sleep or comming out of sleep to the desktop/mce.

ok under normal windows power options ( control panel / power options ) I have set hibernate to occur about 5 mins but nothing happens ?!?!
 
Depending on your motherboard hibernate mode will stop the system recording from sleep mode (also having the MCE front end will possibly stop the PC from going to sleep automatically)

To record a TV program you must have/do:-

1. Your motherboard must support S1 or S3 sleep modes (S3 is much better as it turns harddisks etc off while asleep).

2. You must have the chipset/cpu driver installed to enable power management.

3. Set program(s) to record in MCE.

4. Use the sleep button on your MCE remote or use the sleep option in the start menu.

5. The PC will come out of sleep mode and record the TV program (with the screen blank) and then go back to sleep.

6. The PC can be brought out of sleep mode by the remote (if configured correctly) or by the keyboard/mouse/start button (depending how the BIOS is set up).
