Car is 2011/61 Vauxhall Corsa (type D) 1.2 petrol.

New front top mounts on way as drop link renewal has only partially sorted clunking.

I am thinking about sockets that allow a torx bit through to stop spin. Or is there another way?

Top mounts in a Corsa’s have play in them as it’s a floating strut.
When logging in to MOT test them there’s testing advice saying not to fail them as it’s usual to have.
You may be wasting your time and money replacing them.

Fair. It might not be them causing the clunk, could be a ball joint, etc but its a new noise and I am just changing common culprits to see if it goes. My son is having the car as a first foray in to motoring.

He certainly will.
To answer OP’s original question, use a swan neck ring spanner on top nut, then place torx or hex on a ratchet (whatever it has) into the top of the strut and undo.
