Get an Ice bag and bandage it to your jaw, this will actually hurt for a minute but after that it will make a nice difference.

Dental pain is best sorted by draining an infection or removing the source of the pain or the assoicated nerve.
Ibuprofen will help, as will other antiinflmmatories, but you won't get much stronger that'll be of any use.
Codiene based stuff works differently but generally doesn't touch dental pain, and DHC and other such rubbish that people's grannies have for aches and pains are worthless for dental pain.

Get some sleep.
Get some proper pain relief by attending a dentist.

You summed up your problem in the first line, 'I have had toothache for ages now', sorry sympathy just went into the floor.

oil of cloves.
rotters

Might help if you can get it into the infected spot, it is a mild anesthetic, so if it can access the effected nerves it should be capable of mildly numbing them, problem is, often a drill is needed to 'hit the spot'.

This is probably a medical thread btw, and might be locked.

you can make an appointment to see the local emergency dentist (you can get the number from your local A&E), eg for an anaesthetic injection

OR see your GP to ask about getting lignocaine gel to rub on your sore tooth and gums

I found the codeine based painkillers prescribed by my dentist to be essentially useless. Ibuprofen seemed to have more effect as did sleep, and keeping warm.

But in the end the only solution is to get it sorted, which for me was a thoroughly miserable experience.

Nail on the head, why did you wait? If I have a toothache, first thing in the morning i would be on the phone asking for a same day appointment.

Just for those who can['t read full sentences...

I have had a toothache for ages now, and awaiting to go to hospital to get dental work done (yes hospital, as its a lot of work *cry*)

Also medical thread against rules.

But Ibuprofen is probably the best thing til you have the work done*

*Disclaimer - Any ill effects caused by this are not the fault of SilverTongue or of OcUK.

Ring up NHS Direct and get some proper medical advice, like how you can see an emergency dentist.

+1

They will tell you which painkillers you can safely overlap to give fairly good coverage until you can see a dentist.

I also advise getting a good boxset (or downloading from iTunes, etc.) of an interesting TV series you've not seen before or getting into a decent game as that will pass the time and offset some of the pain during that time.

dabbing some gauze in strong spirits then placing on the painful area will temporarily numb it, done this with Bacardi once although now the smell of it makes me want to barf
