right the rules are simple.

you can only pick from current players therefore you cannot have pele or best in your team.

you need to pick a top 11 with 7 subs, the team should be one that theoretically works well together. so therefore you cannot have all attacking players, etc.

i'll go first but will probably change after thinking more about it


messi - ronaldo


gourcuff - xavi - iniesta


mascherano


evra - vidic - lucio - alves


cesar


bench - rooney, balotelli, tevez, maicon, fabiano, lloris, essien


i have picked a fairly young squad, balotelli isnt proven but every time i have seen him play he has been immense, especially when he comes on as a sub. i have picked my bench as players who could come on and completely change a game if needed to. i know i havent put rooney in the starting 11, he has had a very good season, but messi's has been better and ronaldo would be an ideal partner due to his height. tevez and messi would link up well (both play for argentina). rooney and ronaldo would link up well. fabiano could fit into any team. essien can play any position in his own half apart from goal.

every player in the team is linked to at least 2/3 other members in the team, be it by league, country, club or old team mates.

i was thinking of picking malouda but he needs another few games at the level he has been playing at recently. other than that they have drogba who is an immense player but sometimes his attitude can be detrimental. they have a good balance in their team. thats why they are top. not because they have the best players.

he only played for a few minutes, if you saw him play at the weekend as soon as he came on he hit the cross bar from an amazing free kick. he is only 19 yet playing for 1 of the top 5 teams in the world. he is used as a super sub and is very creative down the wing, he has had a hard time recently which could have affected his play tonight for the 15 mins he was on.

as for your comment on alves, he was robbed of a penalty tonight. he was out of position once when the goal came in and his crosses were fine.

Gone for Alex and Lucio at the back as OP says they need to work well together, they had a lot of experience for Brazil a while back.

Not sure about my RB, nobody has particularly caught my eye of late. Maybe Puyol as with that lot in front of him he shouldn't need to get forward much.

errrrr clichy and walcott shouldnt be anywhere here not even the bench. surprising you have picked iniesta over xavi too and xavi isnt even in the team yet walcott is. i know some people have differing opinions, but walcott would have trouble doing keepy ups with a balloon, he has no control what so ever and scuffs 90% of passes, shots and crosses. i'd take balotelli over walcott any day.

bosingwa then, i know hes injured but he is a current player. alves is good, he has had some bad games of late but he adds so much to the team in terms of attacking. when defending his pace is very useful and shows strength too. he also has a cracking free kick, its just a pity that barcelona and brazil have so many choices when it comes to free kicks that he only gets a chance once in a blue moon.

Essien can play anywhere in his own half apart from goal, maicon can also play CB as well as RB and LB. You are allowed to play people out of their regular position. Alex Ferguson used to play rooney at left mid. Ronaldo has also played on the left wing this season just like nani even though they both prefer right wing.

if your a top world class footballer, then you should be able to play a multiple number of positions. Hell when barcelona were drawing the other week, Pique turned into a striker from centre back, and he played amazing up front, it even looked like he was in his natural position.

Just like when i play football, im a great defender / defensive midfielder. My passing is my best attribute along with hitting volleys, making me a great midfielder / attacking mid. I can also play in goal and did so at primary school. The only places where i cant play would be the wings or up front. I tend to need a second or two before lining up my shot, whereas your better off with a striker who can hit it first time. My volleys though from outside the box are usually screamers and usually leave the goalkeeper and team mates congratulating me. So i would feel comfortable in many positions.

Who would play defensive mid in your team if xavi or fabregas got injured? there is iniesta, but he is an attacking mid and his defending is poor.

But in all seriousness I stand by my opinion that a team of grafters who are aggressive and energetic with a few individuals who can nick a goal will be more successful than the Real approach of buying all the best players and somehow thinking all that individualism will necessarily translate into a better team.

thats why i chose tevez also, the most skillful grafter out there, yeah hes small, but his finishing, ball control and movement are amazing, he just never seems to give up, or relax, even if his side are winning 5-0 or losing 5-0

he never played rubbish, he hardly got a game, tevez and berbatov, were both on the bench for most of the season, plus with the money you got for ronaldo, tevez would have been a bargain.

hes got like 22 goals in 32 games this season, a lot better than nani or berbatov.

if i was man u, i would have bought tevez and ribery or silva, sold berbatov and nani. and still had change from the 90m from ronaldo to buy another world class player or two like villa or lahm.

if he made 51 appearances then why does wiki say

2007–2009 Manchester United 63 (19)

that means in 2007-2008 he made 12 appearances when you didnt have berbatov, then he made 51 when you did have him. lol

so basically he was used in the fa cup and carling cup a lot but not in the league in his last season as i previously said. also of these 63 appearances i bet you a lot of them where sub appearances, can we keep this thread on topic from now on?
