First off credit to the OP of the Top 20 thread. I was really looking forward to the results but none came. I wrote a small application in java to help with this as there is a lot of calculations to be performed and simply entering the data was tedious. I couldn't imagine the headache involved having to use pen and paper.
Secondly, I have never written code where bugs didn't eventually emerge over time. This app seemed to work but I think you get the jist of the disclaimer I'm giving. The results may be inaccurate hence preliminary in the title. They are open to revision should I discover a bug in the code.
Thirdly, I took the rules under my own understanding. I spent many hours on this so please if you have criticism keep it sugar coated. I can already hear some of you saying Grand Theft Auto - PS1, What! Quite simply I grouped most series of games together where it made sense. i.e All Battlefields go under Battlefield 2. Morrowind and Oblivion go under Elder Scrolls etc. Same with GTA and most other games on the list. Its probably better to list games I did not group together. All Counter Strikes go under Source. I play Source and am aware how divided the community is over 1.6 vs Source vs 1.5 etc. Half Life and Half Life 2, together they would have dominated the list. It would have been straight up rape. Zelda was grouped in to 64 and SNES. Supreme Commander and Total Annihilation fall under Total Annihilation. Final Fantasy 7 includes all Final Fantasies. Ignore Platform, it includes all different ports etc. i.e Mass Effect is on both PC and 360.
Finally, thanks to all those who took the time to vote. I know it was hard leaving out so many great games. That is the important bit though because people really had to think about what they put down. If it was your Top20 it would have gotten messy after 10-15. Top 5 means you only put down games your really would give a stamp of quality.
