UK garage was a late 90s form of music that was quite soulful with a dance beat often inspired by jungle. The beat was often two-step (but not always). The baseline and melody was such that if the beat was half the tempo i.e. 65bpm instead of 130bpm, then it would have passed as R&B music. So that's what garage was.

I've looked at the UK top 40 charts today and at no.6 is a track called "Don't Play" by Anne-Marie. It's not at the harsher ("gangsta") end of garage, but it fits the bill nonetheless. With the beat removed or halved, it would be R&B music again.

I've also been following a remix artist on YouTube called Pogo for a few years, and he recently started making garage music too.

As a middle-aged coffin dodger, I have stayed away from the charts since the early 2000s, but I have found it more interesting recently as it's becoming more dance-orientated again. I can see DJ Tiesto is kicking about still although his current top 10 entry is pretty cheesy. Most interestingly is the Nightcralers' "Push The Feeling On" from 1994/5, and a remix of that is back in the top 10 too! Everything else in the charts seems to be either EDM-house, R&B or trap (which is another two-step R&B style but more baseline). I also like the Wellerman which is now at no.1 although I preferred the original sea shanty that did the rounds in late 2020 rather than the numerous EDM-house versions.
