If you had to list the "top 5" current graphics cards, in decending order of approx price, that could fit a 775 socket P45 PCI-E 2.0 ready board - and would only need to max-out on a 22" monitor....

...what would they be?

4870/260
4850
8800GT

all fine and dandy at 1680 x 1050, obviously the 260/4870 will fare better but the 4850/8800 are excellent budget friendly options without a budget level of performance

1, Plait ATI Radeon HD 4850

2, Gainward ATI Radeon HD 4850

3, Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 4850

4, HIS ATI Radeon HD 4850

5, Asus ATI Radeon HD 4850

In that order.

Think price-wise I was looking more at 4850/8800GT...

which would you say was better out of these two?

Or which would run better on an Asus P5Q-E ?

Well, the motherboard presumably isn't the deciding factor, but the 4850 usually has a reasonable lead over the 8800 GT, particularly if you like to really crank up the AA. :p

4870 all the way mate, running everything I can throw at it on max.

Very happy with it, went with Asus in the end becuase pretty much same price as everyone else BUT includes a 3yr warranty :)

Then if you do decide to go with a 24"+ monitor you can always xfire another 4870 in.
