Top 5 guitarists

Surely Tony Iommi should get a mention, he along with Sabbath virtually created a genre of Music. Many of the guitarists mentioned above single out Iommi as an influence. He may not be a 100 mph/shredding type lead soloist but his solos are always tasteful and his riff writing is second to none.

1. Tony Iommi.
2. Yngwie Malmsteen. (saw him live early 90's, didn't realize you could do that with a guitar:eek:)
3. Bruce Franklin ( Trouble )
4. Angus Young.
5. Joe Satriani.

1. Frank Zappa

2. Tony Iommi (Riffing awesome!)

3. Dr. Know (Gary Miller - Bad Brains)

4. Manitas de Plata (Little Silverhands)

5. Angus Young

That Rolling Stone top 100 is so US biased.

Wow this is difficult, since I have a lot of favourites.

My top 5 who influenced me heavily:
John Petrucci
Steve Vai
Adam Jones
Allan Holdsworth
Fredrik Thordendal

for me, the stuff I listen to and my favourites, etc. I would say:

1) Joe Satriani, I think he is actually the best at his trade in the world.
2) Brian Haner Jnr. (aka. Synyster Gates) really underrated guitarist, especially considering his age and technical ability!
3) Randy Rhoads, rest in peace brother! :(
4) Zakk Wylde, he plays with such feeling and conviction.
5) Alexi Laiho, not really into Bodom much these days but he is an incredibly talented young guitarist, could be one of the greats.

would have added Michael Schenker as well if it was top six, UFO were at their best with Schenker, things went a bit downhill IMO after he departed. his brother Rudolf is also a decent guitarist, and Scorpions are epic! :D

how do people rate Gus G whose doing guitars for Ozzy these days, he seems like a good axeman. :)

It's a your list of guitarists, who you think think is the best.

If we all liked the same things it would be a dull world :)

I certainly don't think he's the 'best' but how he influenced me is beyond measure.
If it was a 'greatest guitarist ever' thread then I'd be putting Tommy Emmanuelle down but he's done nothing to influence me.
Try telling that to Naffa though (who hasn't turned up yet).

What's your reasoning behind Noel Gallagher?

He obviously thinks Noel Gallagher is crap and Janick ruined Iron Maiden

That's exactly what I mean, I've put John Squire in mine as he had a massive influence on my musical tastes. (as did the others)

Most people would argue he shouldn't be in that list but for me he reintroduced the bluesy sound I was looking for back into the main stream :)
