Each car is given an overall satisfaction score out of 100. This is made up from:

Build quality (22%)
Craftsmanship (22%)
Driving experience (19%)
Ownership costs (17%)
Service received (20%)

56,000 owners of cars bearing 03, 53, 04 and 54 registrations are included.

Overall

1 Honda S2000
For the third year in the trot, screaming VTEC power wins

2 Honda Jazz
Honda's yin and yang at the top of the table. Sensible, but great

3 Skoda Octavia
Old-gen Octavia, a masterpiece of dependability

4 Skoda Fabia
No fluke for Skoda, the Fabia is cheap and charming

5 Lexus RX300
Pseudo-SUV is so solid, and perfectly sorted by dealers too

6 Lexus IS200/300
Owners of the old-style IS are still smiling about Lexus service

7 Skoda Superb
Stretched Passat ranks 67 places above the original

8 Fiat Panda
A long awaited return to tiny car form for Fiat. Ciao bambino!

9 Mazda MX-5
The one before the MX-5 grew up on us. Still did the business

10 Jaguar XK
All-aluminium XJ6 and 8 justify every penny of owners' outlay

12 Toyata Yaris

36 Nissan 350Z

40 BMW 3 Series

56 Audi A3

68 Lotus Elise

70 BMW 5 Series

73 Nissan Micra

80 Ford Mondeo

82 Alfa Romeo 147

88 Ford Focus

101 Saab 9-3

127 Vauxhall Astra

143 Renault Laguna
Last year's fourth from bottom car staggers up the table

144 Ford C-Max
Owners of Ford's other sports MAV say they're treated like dirt

145 Mercedes A-Class
Quite a claim: the old-shape A-Class is the UK's worst car to drive

146 Mercedes M-Class
Bottom placed two years ago, very nearly as miserable now

147 Peugeot 407
One of the newest cars in the survey falls at the first hurdle

148 Citroen C8
Near-identical twin MPV to the Peugeot 807, only just better

149 Renault Megane
A cute backside isn't enough distraction for the Megane's owners

150 Peugeot 307
No area of fit, finish or reliability ranks above awful for this heap

151 Renault Espace
As before, big MPVs like the Espace get the strongest kicking here

152 Peugeot 807
Falls down in every area. As satisfying as a dose of dysentery

Obviously, statistics aren't everything. To say that a Porsche 911 is less liable than a Skoda Octavia doesn't take into account the greater engineering complexity of the Porsche, that components tend to be under greater stress and there are simply more things to go wrong.

Still, the survey probably serves as an approximate guide.

Good to see the Panda right up there. If Fiat can keep making cars like that, they might dig themselves out of the mess they're in :)

Evo were raving about the Panda 100HP in this month's edition of the magazine, saying it handles brilliantly and is great fun to drive. They were also saying it was a faster point to point car than the Clio V6. It's a long time since Evo were so effusive about a hatchback.

I really want to have a go in the 100HP. My dad has a 1.3 MultiJet Panda, he and I drove it down to southern France last summer and it really is a cracking little car.

Ex had the Dynamic, 1.0 litre and it had absoloutely awful handeling, it felt like you were on a park bench.

Inside the build quality was next to awful, the electrics were a complete mess and it is ugly as sin.

I'd still give the 100 a go...

I really cant believe the s2000 does so well, I had nothing but problems with mine - fair enough all were fixed under warranty but just a quick look over at s2ki.com will reveal how many s2k's have issues, I used to have to hit my MAF sensor with a rubber mallet everyday - its common practice and a known issue despite having the unit replaced multiple times - shoddy and truely undeserving of any satisfaction.

S2000 is up there because all the clubs & fanboys group together and only lavish praise even if they have problems. Same a few years back when it was the impreza/legacy.

Edit: Same with the Fuddys driving the Reet Honda Jazzes and Skoda Bland-ers :p

sounds plausible :)

in fairness I would also laugh if I saw a subaru up there too :D

Don't forget though that with any car owner's website you're going to have a lot of people posting about problems or technical issues. It doesn't necessarily mean that its a fair representation of the car across the board. Rarely, do you have all the people who haven't had any problems with their cars posting about how its had clockwork reliability.

They don't make a 1.0 litre Nuova Panda. The petrol engine you can get with a Dynamic is the 1.2 (other engine is the 1.3 MJ diesel). The Active (base model) has a 1.1. As for the handling - they do roll a bit, but I wouldn't go as far as to call the handling awful. The steering is a touch over-assisted (something the 100HP fixes) but it does at least tell you what the car is up to.

I will concede some to your points here - Dads car has had two things go wrong inside. First - one of the heater vents cracked when Dad was adjusting its angle, dealer replaced it under warranty. Second - the headlight switch started acting up, dealer replaced the steering column stalk under warranty.

It's also totally worthless becuase it fails to take into account expectation.

Example. Buy Skoda. it's cheap, and only 3 things go wrong with it, which the dealer fixes. How great is that? 10/10!

Buy Porsche. It's £70k. Something goes wrong with it. WTF! ITS A PORSCHE!!! AND IT BROKE??? 1/10

See what I mean?

Then of course there is what you are used to..

Person A drives a tatty Sierra. Comes into some money, buys his first nice car - a Honda Jazz. Well he loves it. No rust, it starts first time, and its all shiney. 10/10!

Person B changes job and loses his company 7 Series. Gets a 3 Series. He hates it. It's nothing like as good as his 7. 1/10.

Thats why the top of the table is full of cars which are better than people expect, whereas stuff with a reputation for the highest quality are mid table.

Props to the S2000, though, it breaks the rules I mentioned and deserves its place.

You are being overly harsh. It conveys people to their saloon with commensurate ease. It does exactly what it says on the tin. Remember, its just a little 2 litre Sports car Simon said :D

my impreza is a 2 litre too, I'd definitely class that as a sports car, the s2k doesnt even have a glove box! when you think of cars and things they should definitely have a glove box is a must, see it fails :p

Did you use an invisible hammer for that, so much for understanding the problems - S2000's dont have MAF sensors. :p

No fanboys use the JD Power survey do they, let alone actually make comments on them?

I really don't get this whole survey thing. They take a "sample" of Joe Public, meaning that of course the more run of the mill cars are going to score higher than the rarer ones just due to mass numbers of people rating them :/

Such a pointless waste of time and resources IMO.
