The BBC's flagship pop music programme Top of the Pops has been cancelled after 42 years, the BBC has announced.

"The time has come to bring the show to its natural conclusion," said the BBC's director of television Jana Bennett.

In a statement, the BBC said the weekly programme could no longer compete with 24-hour music channels.

Top of the Pops was first broadcast in 1964, from a converted church in Salford, Manchester. The final edition will be shown on 30 July.

I am pretty shocked, but I hope they replace it with something worth watching…

It's been coming for ages. On demand music in the form on the internet and digital TV have made it less relevant today, to the point of redundancy.

I really liked the switch to Sunday evening so you could find out the chart. It was rubbish on Fridays cos it was a week old.

It's been dying a slow protracted death anyway. The beeb should've put it out it's misery years ago.

Its been coming a while and isnt a great shock. I remember back in the day watching it on Friday nights before all these music channels.

A soon as a program starts getting shunted around the schedule, it's time up.

TOTP is what got me into rave and techno, back in 1991, I think that was the last time I watched it as well.

never liked it, my guess its its gona b a phone in quiz show, i cant wait!
Not on the BBC it wont.

i used to enjoy watching it before eastenders, then as soon as they changed what channel it was shown on I never kept track of it.
originally i thought they had cancelled it then but later found out it was moved to BBC2

Since they "revamped it" about 18 months 2 years ago it seems it was aimed at a much younger audience...it went abit CBBC if you ask me.

There is a real lack of credible music shows on normal telly, and it's a real shame. Something more like Jules Holland but slightly more mainstream would be great.

just wait and see, they have enough adverts already, o sorry they dont have adverts just ermmm now what to call them....small previews?

it is a load of crap anyway, many of the bands just mime because they can't sing, nearly all the music is crap, the presenters are annoying and the people in the crowds are morons.
When andy peters took control of it it was always going to be a matter of time.

I haven't watched it for years, and it's time was clearly up anyway. Long since past it's heyday.

Question is, will the Beeb have any programmes worth watching soon? Grandstand gone. TOTP gone. What's next?

I still wish someone would come up with a decent technology programme. I still mourn the loss of Tomorrow's World. :(

Bloody hell, this and They Think Its All Over in the space of a day.

I liked the little digest of live music it gave you - its sortof like a beginners Jules Holland :D

Shame :(

OK. That's that answered then. What's next? Has HIGNFY been binned yet? :(

All we need now is Doctor Who to disappear again (yes I know about Billie Piper going, that's been on the cards for a while).

The album chart show on Channel 4 isn't bad, except it's on at stupid o'clock but it all based on live performances.
