Best sound card = a Xonar variant, check the features of each and decide which one suits your needs.

Xonar D1/DX are the best value I think, the price difference between the cards is mainly connectivity differences, they all give around the same sound quality.

Auzentech Prelude.

another one for 1212m, very nice sounding card. are you going straight to speakers? or to an amp?
just to make sure, as if you're going to an analog amp you'll need a DAC too! (silly mistake i made a while back)

What? You don't need to use a DAC at all, it connects straight to an analogue amp. You've just got to use the right cables. TRS to Phono, or TRS to XLR depending on what amp you have... The great thing about this card is that it has pretty much the best onboard DAC out of any soundcard around today! :p ;)

I forgot to mention, there's no point in getting an awesome card like the 1212m if you connect it to some crappy Z5500's, you need to connect it to a half decent sound system to get the best from it. If you only have computer speakers tho, just get any card, you won't hear much difference from onboard sound tbh.

Doesnt the Xonar have issues with dolby/5.1? It needs to emulate it?

Also isnt XFI's better quality thanks to the higher bit rate?

oh flippin hell!
cheers for that, dunno how i could have been so stupid as to overlook that, can get rid of this cheap DAC now! :)

Nope, Xonar has native DD and 5.1 support and more. Also, the Xonar outputs 24bit 192kHz, whereas the X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty 'only' outputs 24 bit 96 kHz.

Besides, the Xonar has faultless x64 support. For these reasons I went with the Xonar DX and have to say am delighted with its quality.
