What would you go for if you had a budget of £1000? Main uses will be work, not games, so things like internet, email, applications. Nice big screen would be good.

Thanks.

boring

I guess the lack of interest shows what a boring spec u are looking for :-)

How portible do you want it to be ? 15.4 or 17 ?

Apart from that...

HP, Toshiba, Dell, siemens are all good brands

Internet, e-mail and most applications generally don't need top-spec. To be honest you don't need to spend £1000 to get top spec anyway, my Vostro has 2.4 GHz C2D, 3 GB ram, 250 GB drive, and was only £550. Big screens are nice but then your laptop is bulky, heavy and a pain to carry.

Maybe go to the purple shirt place and see which brand has styling which appeals to you. The Sonys look pretty nice to me, plus the Thinkpads. Dell XPSs look nice too but you'd be paying for gaming performance you don't need. Vostro 1500/1700 is worth a look.

I've got the MSI GX700 extreme from OcUK.

More than happy with it.

Big screen (1680x1050), 2.4 45nm C2D (3mb cache total rather than per core, I think?) 3gb ram, 250gb hdd, 512mb 8600gt.

It's glossy black and not the 'tattoo' look of the earlier models.

Only downside is the fan is a bit noisy and upsets the built-in mic.
