I still don't know what to do . I have a habit of spending money or finding ways to when I have more money than I usually do.

Hard to compare the two as both will suit your needs and both a great value for money, just in different price brackets. Though a 7970 is the cheaper option, if you really like a 290 (only has 7% less performance of a 290x) and think the extra money is worth spending, then go for it!

In a situation like this, i think that ultimately is up to how much you think that price difference is worth to you. Sure there's almost a hundred quid difference between the two cards but your the one that will know best if you would rather spend the premium on something else or pay the premium and get the card. If your just going to end up spending the spare cash on random stupid stuff like i would if it were sitting there in my wallet, then go for the 290. If you can put the extra cash to good use somewhere else, go for the 7970!

At the moment that 7970 offers great performance at that price point, incredible value. I personally think you should wait for the aftermarket versions of R9 290. The R9 290 can be upto 30-45% faster than the 7970. I think that will justify spending an additional 50-60% £££s.

The R9 290 does not have mature drivers at the moment, the performance should get better overtime. If for any reason you wanted to upgrade later, the R9 290's crossfire seems to be better than the HD 7XXX series judging by what we have seen on benchmarks.

Both great cards but the 290 has a lot of advantages performance and features its not for behind the x version either but it is still on reference cooler and close to fifty percent more expensive
Ask yourself how much performance do you need and can you live with the heat and noise of a reference coolrr
